Dhaka: A young woman named Shahinur Akhtar, who set herself on fire in Kamalnagar Upazila of Lakshmipur demanding recognition as a wife, has died while undergoing treatment at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College (DMCH) Hospital.
Doctors declared her dead at around 11:30 am on Monday (April 22). Earlier, she was admitted to the burn unit of DMCH on Sunday (April 21). Shahinur is the daughter of Zafar Alam of Sonagazi village in Raozan upazila of Chittagong.
Quoting doctors from the burn unit, Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH Police Camp, said that 55 percent of Shahinur's body was burned.
The young woman who was burned while undergoing treatment at Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital said that Salah Uddin met her on her mobile phone. Later, a love affair developed. They got married a year and a half ago. During the marriage, Salah Uddin kept the news of his first wife and children a secret. When I came to know about this, I went from Chittagong to Kamalnagar and asked for my wife's recognition, Salah Uddin poured kerosene oil on my body and set it on fire.
Local UP member Hafiz Ullah and village policeman Abu Taher said that the locals asked the girl to bring her marriage papers. Later, the girl went to the market, took kerosene and went to a soybean field next to Salahuddin's house, set herself on fire and sat in a cowshed. At that time, women in the area ran and put out the fire with water.
He also said that at the beginning of the incident, the young woman said that she set herself on fire. After arriving at the hospital, she said that her husband set her on fire. The matter is mysterious.
Kamalnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC-Investigation) Alamgir Hossain said, "The smell of kerosene was found in the girl's bag. It seems that she carried the kerosene herself. Locals say that she set herself on fire. However, an investigation is underway to uncover the truth."
