Rangpur Riders won the fifth edition of the BPL by defeating Dhaka Dynamites by 57 runs. Batting first, Dhaka scored 206 runs on the back of Chris Gayle's tornado innings of 146 runs. In reply, the champions of the fourth edition of the BPL were bundled out for 141 runs.
Rangpur Riders batted first after losing the toss on Tuesday afternoon. Rangpur did not get off to a good start. Dhaka captain Shakib Al Hasan dismissed Johnson Charles, the centurion of the previous match, on the fifth ball of the second over. However, Rangpur never looked back after that. Gayle played the entire 20 overs with Brendon McCullum. At the same time, there was a flurry of fours and sixes. After a half-century off 33 balls, Gayle scored a century off 57 balls. In the end, Gayle remained unbeaten on 146 runs off 169 balls with 18 sixes and 5 fours.
At the other end, former Kiwi captain Brendon McCullum, though not as devastating as Gayle, remained unbeaten on 51 runs off 43 balls. Among Dhaka's bowlers, Sunil Narine was a successful bowler despite not getting a wicket. Gayle, despite the storm on the field, gave away only 18 runs in his 4 overs.
Dhaka opener Mehedi Maruf, who came out to bat with a huge target of 207 runs, returned before any runs could be added. English batsman Liam Denly failed to add a single run to the scoreboard. Thus, losing wickets in a continuous interval, Dhaka stopped at 149 runs in 20 overs. Zahurul Islam scored the highest 50 runs for Dhaka. This wicket-keeper batsman scored 2 sixes and 4 fours in 38 balls. Apart from this, Shakib scored 26, Evin Lewis 15 and Sunil Narine scored 14 runs.
For Rangpur, Sohag Gazi, Nazmul Hasan and Isudu Udana took two wickets each, while Mashrafe, Rubel and Bopra took one wicket each.
