The number of mobile phone users in the world is increasing day by day. According to statistics, by 2019, about 2.7 billion people around the world will use smartphone devices. At the same time, the number of mobile phone users will reach 4.68 billion people, which is about 67 percent of the world's population.

According to global data published by GSMA Intelligence, the total number of mobile users worldwide has already reached the five billion milestone. In Bangladesh, 158.438 million mobile numbers have been registered as of February 2019, which is 97.23 percent of the country's total population.

Of course, mobile phones, especially smartphones, have incredible benefits such as instant communication with family and work, networking, entertainment, cameras, GPS, education, data storage, privacy, various applications, etc. However, people are becoming increasingly addicted to various types of app-based smartphones, which is having various harmful effects on their health.
Let's find out how your smartphone is acting as a silent killer to you-

• Pressure on the eyes

People often stare at the small font on a smartphone screen for a long time while typing or reading, which is harmful to the eyes. If you do this regularly, it can cause blurred vision, dry eyes, pressure on the eyes, dizziness, etc.

To reduce the risk of eye damage, it is recommended to keep the mobile phone screen at least 16 inches away from the face. Also, try to take a break every 20 minutes while using your mobile phone and shift your gaze from the mobile screen to a distant place. If you feel any kind of pressure in your eyes, consult a doctor immediately.

• Risk of brain cancer

You may know that mobile phones contain harmful electromagnetic radiation. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, mobile phone users are at risk of developing brain tumors or cancer due to the effects of microwave radiation. Therefore, to reduce the risk of brain tumors or cancer, mobile phones should not be used for a long time.

• Neck and back pain

Most smartphone users spend hours browsing the internet or social media on their screens. Sitting or lying in the same position for long periods of time can cause strain on the neck and back muscles. To avoid the risk of neck and back pain, keep your body and spine in the correct position while using your smartphone.

• Sleep disturbances

Another negative effect of excessive mobile phone use is sleep disturbance. People often lie in bed and browse social media, which causes them to sleep late. Again, after going to bed, the sound of various notifications on mobile phones, including messages and emails, also disrupts sleep.

This bad habit, along with sleep disturbances, also leads people to the risk of insomnia or insomnia. Many people set alarms and keep their phones near their heads at night. The microwave radiation from the phone damages brain cells and increases the risk of cancer or tumors. In addition, regular sleep disturbances, dizziness, depression, bad mood, anxiety and many other physical and mental problems can occur.

Adequate sleep is one of the main requirements for maintaining good physical and mental health. Therefore, you should stop browsing the web or watching videos and movies on your smartphone after going to bed. Remember to keep your mobile phone away from your body parts while sleeping.

• Male infertility

Some studies have shown that keeping a smartphone in your pocket can reduce male fertility. Radiation from mobile phones can reduce sperm volume, count, and density. However, there is no strong evidence that mobile phone use reduces female fertility. So men should be careful about keeping their smartphones in their pockets all the time.

• Risk of microbial attack

A mobile phone screen contains more germs than a toilet. Studies have shown that mobile phone screens contain harmful bacteria like E. coli, which can cause diarrhea, fever, infection, vomiting, etc. Children especially tend to suck the smartphone screen in their mouths, through which germs can enter their body. Various diseases can also spread. Therefore, you should keep mobile phones away from your children. Don't forget to clean the mobile phone screen regularly.

After all, it is said that if people around the world continue to use mobile phones at a very fast pace, the number of mobile phones will soon outnumber people. It is also true that we cannot deny the various benefits of mobile phones in today's world. However, we must remember that health is more valuable than work, study, entertainment or socialization. There is no substitute for good sleep to maintain a healthy body and mind. That is why there is a call to reduce the use of mobile phones. Instead, we can get enough sleep and spend quality time with family and friends.- UNB
