Wife sold in Kolkata after five months of marriage

A young man named Md. Sohag (22) from Kamalnagar, Lakshmipur, has been accused of selling his wife to an Indian brothel after not receiving dowry money. The police have arrested him on this charge.

 On Thursday (October 20) evening, Kamalnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Solaiman confirmed the arrest of the husband. He was arrested based on the confession and complaint of the victim housewife. Sohag is the son of Safiq Ulya of Charubhuti village of Bhabaniganj union in Sadar upazila. He is in the custody of Kamalnagar Police Station.

The victim's family said that about 5 months ago, Sohag married Rina Akhter, daughter of Tajul Islam of Motirhat area of Charkalkini union in Kamalnagar, in a family marriage. Although a dowry of 50 thousand taka was supposed to be given, 30 thousand taka was given. Sohag pressured his wife at various times for the remaining money. In the meantime, two months of marriage passed. Later, Sohag took Rina to Dhaka, promising to travel. There, after giving her drugs and smuggling her in a drum, Sohag took her to his sister near Kolkata, India. Later, even though Sohag returned to the country, he left Rina behind.

Police said that after being offered the remaining dowry money, Sohag, tempted by the offer, went to his in-laws' house on Wednesday (October 19) night. He was detained there and the in-laws informed the police. Later, the police arrested him and brought him to the police station.

Victim Rina Akhter told reporters, "I was drugged and taken to a person named Shahida in India. Shahida is said to be Sohag's sister. I was subjected to inhuman torture there for 3 months. If I did not listen to them, they would physically torture me. I want justice for Sohag and his sister Shahida."

In this regard, Kamalnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Solaiman said that Sohag has been arrested based on the complaint. However, the truth of the incident has not yet been revealed.

Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mosleh Uddin and others are trying to unravel the mystery of the incident. Legal action will be taken after the real incident is revealed.
