EC seeks three-year jail term for obstructing election news gathering

The Election Commission (EC) has recommended amendment of the Representation of the People Ordinance (RPO) with provisions of imprisonment for a maximum of three years if the media workers are prevented from collecting the news of the vote.

Election Commissioner Ahsan Habib said this in response to questions from reporters at the election building in Agargaon of the capital on Sunday (September 11).

The reporters mentioned the eyes and ears of the Election Commission and said, "Instead of us, you are present and cover the news properly. We are making a new addition to the law.

EC Ahsan Habib said, if anyone tries to harm, attack, damage equipment and companions in the case of dutiful duti, then the provision of jail for a maximum of three years has been kept. In this case, a minimum of one year and fine has been kept. He said that the new section has been recommended to be added to the People's Representation Ordinance Act, he said.
