Argentina has entered the World Cup in great form, going into their first match against Saudi Arabia as favourites.
They proved it in just 10 minutes. Lionel Messi coolly opened the scoring in this World Cup from a spot-kick. With this goal, the forward surpassed two legends Diego Maradona and Gabriel Batistuta to score for Argentina in four different World Cups.
Messi is in Qatar for his fifth World Cup. He joined the rare club by playing against Saudi Arabia. The forward became the fifth player to play in five World Cups after Antonio Carbajal, Rafael Marquez, Gianluigi Buffon and Lothar Matthaus. He then went on to score goals.
Messi has scored in every tournament except the 2010 World Cup. He has scored one goal in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, four in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, one in the 2018 World Cup in Russia and one in the 2022 World Cup so far. In total, he has scored seven goals in the World Cup.
Maradona previously scored for Argentina in the 1982, 1986 and 1994 World Cups. Batistuta scored in the 1994, 1998 and 2002 World Cups.
