UP member flees with bride after child marriage in Lakshmipur

Md. Arif Hossain, a member of Nagmud Union Parishad in Ramganj, Lakshmipur, disregarded the law and got married as a child. Later, he fled with his bride due to the actions of the administration.

The incident took place on Monday (October 9) at Paik's house in Machimpur village of Chandipur Uni.

Locals said that the wedding date of UP member Md. Arif Hossain, son of Ruhul Amin of Nagmud village of Bholakot union no. 9 of the upazila, and Nusrat Jahan Jerin (12), daughter of the late Mizanur Rahman of Machimpur Paik's house, was fixed for Monday.

Upon receiving the news, the Upazila Women's Affairs Officer went to the spot on the instructions of the Upazila Executive Officer. But before that, the family members hurriedly completed the wedding arrangements. However, due to the administration's promptness, Arif immediately left the house with the newlyweds and fled.

Meanwhile, villagers said that the bride, Nusrat Jahan Jerin (12), is a 6th grade student of the local Machimpur LM High School.

In this regard, Ramganj Upazila Executive Officer Mohammad Abu Yusuf said that necessary legal action is being taken against UP member Arif Sarkar for disregarding the Child Marriage Prevention Act. He will not be spared under any circumstances.
