An agreement has been signed to establish the country's first large-scale wind-based power plant with a capacity of 55 megawatts.

The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) signed an agreement with the Bangladesh-China Consortium on Sunday to set up a 55-megawatt wind power plant on its own operation basis in Mongla, Bagerhat.

It was said at the event that currently 29 megawatts of wind power is being generated in the country. Work is underway to generate 145 megawatts of wind power through 3 projects and 230 megawatts of wind power is in the pipeline under 5 more projects.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid was the chief guest at the purchase agreement signing ceremony. He said, "Wind will become increasingly important as one of the sources of renewable energy in Bangladesh."

Wind flow data has been collected and wind mapping activities have been completed to assess the feasibility of wind power in 9 locations across the country, including coastal areas. Wind power projects will be accepted after verifying their overall suitability.

State Minister Hamid said, 'Today, with the signing of the agreement to set up a 55 MW wind power plant in Bagerhat Mongla, Bangladesh has taken another step forward on the path of renewable energy. Besides protecting the environment, such projects will also play a strong role in ensuring Bangladesh's energy security.'
