6.6 magnitude earthquake hits Taiwan

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Taiwan on Saturday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The agency said the earthquake struck at around 9:30 p.m. local time, about 50 kilometers north of the coastal city of Taitung.

Its depth from the surface was 10 kilometers.
Local media reported that initially no damage was reported from the earthquake.

Taiwan's meteorological department said the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.4 and was centered at a depth of 7.3 kilometers (4.3 miles).
