The Myanmar military has warned the country's citizens that liking or sharing anti-junta posts or other content on social media could result in three to 10 years in prison.

The junta issued this threat on Tuesday, warning the Myanmar public against showing moral support for the resistance movement.

Myanmar has been gripped by widespread violence since the military seized power in a coup in February last year. The country's junta continues to clash with pro-democracy groups and militia groups led by a shadow government. Zaw Min Tin, the ruling junta's information minister and spokesman, said the "terrorists" were campaigning for funds to destabilize the country and kill innocent people. Therefore, support for them will be dealt with severely.

He said that supporting the activities of the National Unity Government (NUG) or its armed affiliate, the People's Defense Forces (PDF), on social media could result in prison sentences of three to 10 years. Even those who contribute even a small amount of money will face even more dire consequences.

"If you finance terrorists or support their work, you will face severe punishment. We are doing this to protect innocent civilians," he said at a press conference on Tuesday.
