What missiles Iran fired, how Israel countered them

Iran's firing of nearly 180 high-speed ballistic missiles at Israel indicates that Tehran intends to inflict serious damage in Tuesday night's attack. In that respect, this attack was different from the drone and missile attack carried out last April.

High speed ballistic missiles were challenging to target. But the fact that no one was killed in the attack in Israel and only one in the West Bank, according to initial reports, also points to a military failure. However, some of the missiles fired by Iran and parts of them hit the ground.

Iran's Imad and Gadar missiles used earlier this year are six times the speed of sound. They take 12 minutes to reach Israel from Iran. This speed is over 4,600 miles per hour. There, Iran said, this time it had deployed a faster hypersonic FATE-2 missile. The maximum speed of which is about 10 thousand miles per hour.

Two and a half years ago, Iran had approximately 3,000 ballistic missiles, as did the United States. This number will be higher now due to related reasons. Tehran wants to keep most of these missiles, in case Israel escalates the crisis and launches an all-out war.

Firing so many missiles in just a few minutes puts additional pressure on Israel's air defenses. This missile system is very advanced. Missiles launched from there to destroy Iranian missiles in the air are very expensive. It is not certain how much stock these missiles have.

Long-range US-Israeli Aero 3 and Aero 2 systems are commonly used to intercept ballistic missiles. This missile system was first used in the Israel-Hamas war. Along with this system, medium range David Sling defense system is also activated. The more familiar Iron Dome defense system is activated to destroy short-range munitions, often to deflect rockets fired by Hamas from Gaza.

Last April, a financial adviser to the chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces said that the Aero defense system costs $3.5 million once activated. And in the case of David's sling, this cost is one million dollars. Destroying 100 or more missiles costs billions of dollars. Although each Iranian missile costs £80,000 or more.

How many Iranian missiles have hit Israel this time has not yet been confirmed. Out of 120 ballistic missiles fired by Iran last April, only 9 were hit. It caused minor damage to two airfields. In military terms, that attack was also a virtual failure.

In April, Iran launched more than three hundred drones and cruise and ballistic missiles. But on Tuesday they used a relatively slow drone. This time it is believed that they did not use cruise missiles.
