Insults against the Holy Prophet and the Prime Minister in Lakshmipur: Gendholai

In Ramganj, Laxmipur, Chhatra League leaders and activists have thrashed and handed over to the police a computer operator named Mahamudul Hasan Mamun for insulting the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The incident took place in Fatehpur village of Chandipur union in Ramganj upazila on Wednesday morning.

The arrested Mamun Fatehpur is working as an office assistant cum computer operator at Jamiul Uloom Fazil Degree Madrasa and is the son of Abdul Haque, a resident of the Pandit family of Majupur village.

Locals said that Fatehpur Jamiul Uloom Fazil Degree Madrasa office assistant Mahmudul Hasan Mamun posted a post on his Facebook ID (Mamun Pandit) on Wednesday morning, insulting Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). As soon as the post was posted, there was a mixed reaction among the villagers. Upon receiving the news, the president of the madrasa management committee, Rakibul Hasan Masud, arrived at the institution and called an emergency meeting to prepare to take legal action against him. At this time, Chhatra League leaders and activists led by Upazila Chhatra League president Faisal Mal and former Chhatra League leader GS Nazrul Islam, and Municipal Chhatra League president Sahel Chowkia arrived and demanded an explanation for the post. At this time, angry leaders and activists and the combined villagers beat up Mahmudul Hasan for maintaining silence.

Rakibul Hasan Masud, president of the madrasa management committee, said, "As soon as I saw the post on Facebook, I went to the madrasa, found out the issues, wrote in the resolution book and requested that necessary action be taken. Meanwhile, agitated villagers and Chhatra League leaders beat him up."

Accused Mahamudul Hasan Mamun said, "Hackers hacked my Facebook ID and made the post."
Upazila Executive Officer Md. Abu Yusuf said that action is being taken against the office assistant under the existing law.
Officer-in-charge of the police station, Md. Zafar Ahmed, said, "After hearing the news of the mob lynching, the police went to the spot, rescued the accused and collected information and evidence. Preparations are underway to file a case against him under the Information Technology Act."
