The government has taken the initiative to build 560 model mosque complexes in every district and upazila of the country with the help of the Saudi government. The khatibs and imams of these mosques will receive salaries and allowances at the national scale. The muezzins and servants of the respective mosques will also receive similar salaries.

A draft of the salary scale has been sent to the ministry. It recommends that model mosque khatibs be given the eighth grade of the national salary scale, imams the ninth grade, muezzins the 14th grade, and khadems the 16th grade.

Islamic Foundation Bangladesh Director General Samim Mohammad Afzal said that a project has been taken up to build 560 model mosques and Islamic cultural centers across the country. According to the project proposal approved by ECNEC, everyone including the Khatib and Imam of the model mosque will receive salary allowances on a national scale. The design of all mosques will be the same. The mosques will be built in three categories. In the district cities and city corporations, 68 four-story model mosques of category A will have elevators and AC. There will be 476 mosques of category B. There will be 16 mosques of category C, which will be built in coastal areas.

He also said that the basic salary of a khatib will be equal to that of a first-class officer. He will also receive house rent, medical allowance and other ancillary allowances depending on the location.

Sources said that during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to Saudi Arabia from June 3 to 7 last year, she raised the issue of building a model mosque nationwide and offered cooperation, and Saudi Arabia agreed to it. After returning home after the visit, the Prime Minister ordered to make overall preparations, including the design of this model mosque.
