A pregnant mother, Rozina Akhter (18), and her newborn son died due to negligence by doctors and nurses in Raipur, Laxmipur, on Wednesday morning while they were undergoing treatment at the Upazila Government Hospital.
In the morning, the relatives, who were agitated after receiving the news, tried to attack the hospital. Later, they took the bodies of the mother and son and took up a position in front of the hospital. After receiving the news, the police went to the spot and brought the situation under control. The deceased Rozina is the wife of Imran of Gani Mistry's house in Khaser Hat area of Charbangshi union of the upazila. It is learnt that preparations for a case are underway in this regard.
Hospital authorities and the deceased's husband Imran said that pregnant Rozina Akhter was admitted to the labor ward of Raipur Government Hospital on Sunday afternoon, November 19. At that time, when they asked where the doctor was, the nurses on duty started treatment. Later, the doctor on duty saw the pregnant woman and gave the possible date of the cesarean section on November 22. When Rozina started having labor pains around 3 am on Wednesday, the nurses were repeatedly asked to call a doctor, but no one called a doctor and the nurses kept passing the time by talking to each other. At one point, Rozina gave birth to a son, but the newborn died. Shortly after, Rozina also died of excessive bleeding.
Shamima Jahan, the doctor in charge of Raipur Government Hospital, said, "I have no negligence. The mother and newborn died before I could treat the patient as soon as I received the news. There is no issue of negligence in my treatment here."
Raipur Police Station OC (Investigation) Mohammad Solaiman said that necessary action will be taken based on the complaint. However, initially, there are allegations of negligence by the nurse and doctor.
