Lakshmipur: Voting is underway for the general election of the Char Alexander Union Parishad in Ramgatir, Lakshmipur.
Voting began at 8 am on Thursday (December 28); it will continue continuously until 4 pm.
Although polling was scheduled to be held in nine wards in that union, the Election Commission has postponed polling in one ward on the order of the High Court. Voting is underway in the other eight wards for the posts of chairman, general member and reserved women member.
50 candidates are contesting.
Among them, there are five candidates for the chairmanship, 30 for the general membership, and 15 for the reserved women membership.
The Awami League nominated Anwar Hossain (symbol-boat) for the post of chairman, the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) nominated Md. Nazmul Hasan (star), the BNP nominated Habib Ullah Bahar (rice sheaf), the Islami Andolan Bangladesh nominated Md. Riaz Hossain (fan) and the independent Zafar Ahmed (glasses).
According to the Upazila Election Office, voting will be held in 62 booths in 9 centers in 8 wards in the union. 22,822 voters will exercise their voting rights.
Returning Officer and Upazila Election Officer Md. Ariful Islam said that due to the High Court order, voting is not being held for the posts of chairman, general member and reserved women member of ward number 3 of this union. Elections are underway in the other 8 wards.
Police Superintendent ASM Mahatab Uddin said law enforcement agencies are under constant surveillance to ensure fair and impartial elections.
