A court has ordered the seizure of all assets of Abzal Hossain, the accountant of the Directorate General of Health Services, who was suspended on charges of irregularities and corruption, as well as his wife. The special judge's court issued the order on Tuesday following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
ACC Deputy Director and Public Relations Officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya confirmed this information to the media.
Abzal's wife Rubina Khanam joined Comilla Medical College as a stenographer in 1998. In 2000, she voluntarily retired and started a business called Rahman Trade International. The husband and wife originally set up the company to do exclusive business in the Directorate General of Health Services.
According to ACC information, despite receiving a monthly salary of Tk 30,000, Abzal Hossain and his wife own five houses in Uttara, the capital Dhaka. They have another house in Sydney, Australia. And apart from the capital, they own at least 24 plots and flats in different parts of the country. They have many assets, including houses and markets, in the country and abroad. The market value of these assets is more than a thousand crores of Tk.
The ACC investigation found that Abzal Hossain had traveled with his family to various countries, including Singapore and Australia, more than 28 times in the past year. The house he bought in Porter Street Mintu, Sydney, Australia, is worth more than $200,000. The ACC questioned him on January 10 on these allegations.
