Burned young woman in Kamalnagar seeks recognition as wife in hospital..

A young woman named Shahenur Akhtar (24) has been admitted to the hospital after being burnt in a soybean field in Kamalnagar, Lakshmipur.

The woman, who is undergoing treatment at Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, said that her husband Salahuddin set her on fire after she demanded his recognition.

Upon receiving the news, Lakshmipur Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Shafiuzzaman Bhuiyan and District Superintendent of Police (SP) ASM Mahatab Uddin visited the young woman at Sadar Hospital on Sunday (April 21) evening.

Earlier in the afternoon, he was rescued from a soybean field in Ayubnagar area of Charfalkon Union in Kamalnagar Upazila of Lakshmipur, in a burnt state.

Meanwhile, the doctor on duty has referred Shahenur to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College for advanced treatment as her condition is critical. The young woman has suffered burns on about 30 percent of her body, including her face and hands.

Shahenur is the daughter of Zafar Alam of Sonagaji village in Raozan upazila of Chittagong.

It is learned that Salauddin lives with his wife and two sons in Ayubnagar area of Char Falkon Union of Kamalnagar Upazila of Lakshmipur. Salauddin is a rickshaw puller by profession. His father's name is Mahar Ali.

Shahenur, a young woman who was burned and undergoing treatment, said that she met Salahuddin on her mobile phone. At one point, they got married at the Qazi's office about a year and a half ago. About 6 months ago, I came to know that Salahuddin was married. After hearing this, I came to Kamalnagar a few days ago. But I did not get recognition from my wife. I came to Lakshmipur again on Friday (April 19). But this time, my wife was not recognized. Salahuddin set me on fire because I wanted recognition from my wife.

Meanwhile, locals said that people gathered around the area after hearing the screams of a young woman who was burnt in a soybean field in the afternoon. She was taken to the Upazila Health Complex with burns all over her body, but the doctors on duty saw her condition deteriorating and transferred her to the Sadar Hospital.

Sadar Hospital Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Anwar Hossain said the burned girl was treated. She was referred to Dhaka as her condition is critical.

Kamalnagar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Alamgir Hossain said, "The smell of kerosene was found in the girl's bag. She carried the kerosene herself. It is believed that she set herself on fire. However, an investigation is underway to uncover the truth."
