6.6 magnitude earthquake hits Taiwan

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Taiwan on Saturday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The agency said the earthquake struck at around 9:30 p.m. local time, about 50 kilometers north of the coastal city of Taitung.

Its depth from the surface was 10 kilometers.
Local media reported that initially no damage was reported from the earthquake.

Taiwan's meteorological department said the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.4 and was centered at a depth of 7.3 kilometers (4.3 miles).

Accused in 6 cases arrested in Lakshmipur

Police are arresting a youth named Osman Gani alias Pitas (30) with a desi made LG and one round of cartridges in Lakshmipur.

Sheikh Hasina receives phone call from Britain's new king

Britain's new King Charles III has called Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to thank her for attending the funeral of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II.

King Charles expressed his gratitude in a telephone call from Buckingham Palace on Saturday evening (September 17) local time, the Prime Minister's Office's press wing reported.

The Prime Minister is currently in London on a four-day visit to attend the funeral of Britain's late Queen Elizabeth II. He will attend the Queen's funeral at Westminster Abbey on Monday morning. Sheikh Hasina once again congratulated King Charles III on his accession to the throne of the British Empire and wished him a long and prosperous reign. The Prime Minister also recalled the visit of King Charles (then Prince Charles) to Bangladesh in 1997.

He said that Bangladesh was preparing to welcome King Charles and the Queen Consort next month to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom. In response, the King said, "We were looking forward to the visit to Bangladesh on this 50th anniversary. However, due to recent events, it has unfortunately had to be cancelled."

ফরিদপুরের চরভদ্রাসন উপজেলা সদর ইউনিয়নের লোহারটেক গ্রামের সামসুদ্দিন লস্করের ছেলে আদম বেপারী হাবিব লস্কর (৪৫) নিজের প্রতারনা ঢাকতে ভুক্তভোগী পরিবারের স্বজনদের নামে ফরিদপুর কোর্টে চাঁদাবাজীর মামলার অভিযোগ দিয়ে ভীতি সৃষ্টি করে চলেছে বলে অভিযোগ পাওয়া গেছে।
ওই আদমের হয়রানী ও অর্থ আত্মসাতের প্রতিবাদে শনিবার দুপুরে উপজেলা পরিষদের সামনে ক্ষতিগ্রস্থ পরিবারগুলো ও তাদের স্বজনরা মিলে আদম বেপারীর বিচারের দাবী তুলে এক মানববন্ধন কর্মসূচি পালন করেছেন। ক্ষতিগ্রস্থ পরিবারগুলো জেলা প্রশাসক ফরিদপুর, পুলিশ সুপার ফরিদপুর, উপজেলা নির্বাহী অফিসার, চরভদ্রাসন ফরিদপুর ও অফিসার ইনচার্জ, (ওসি) চরভদ্রাসন থানায় স্মারকলিপি প্রদান করেছেন। এ মানববন্ধন কর্মসূচীর সভাপতিত্ব করেন চরভদ্রাসন ইউনিয়ন পরিষদের চেয়ারম্যান মোঃ আজাদ খান। ওই আদম বেপারীর প্রতারনা ও জনহয়রানীর চিত্র তুলে ধরে মানববন্ধনে অন্যান্যের মধ্যে বক্তব্য দেন, বিশিষ্ট সমাজ সেবক আনোয়ার আলী মোল্যা, পাঞ্জু শেখ, শেখ ফজল ও লিটন খান প্রমূখ। জানা যায়, ওই আদম বেপারী দীর্ঘকাল সৌদী আরবে চাকুরী করে প্রায় দেড় বছর আগে বাড়ীতে ফেরার সময় অনেকগুলো ভিসা কপি সাথে নিয়ে সে দেশে আসে। এসব ভিসা দেখিয়ে গ্রাম গঞ্জের সরল প্রান জনগোষ্ঠীর কাছ থেকে ৪/৫ লাখ করে টাকা হাতিয়ে নিয়ে অনেককে বিদেশে পাঠিয়ে মাত্র তিন মাসের আকামা করে পরিবারটি নিঃস্ব হয়েছে বলে অভিযোগ রয়েছে।
আবার কেউ মোটা অংকের টাকা দিয়ে মাসের পর মাস ওই আদমের পিছে ঘুরেও বিদেশে যেতে পারে নাই বা তাদের টাকা আদৌ ফেরত পায় নাই। এসব ভুক্তভোগী পরিবারের মধ্যে উপজেলার বালিয়া ডাঙ্গী গ্রামের শেখ ইমরান হোসেন (৩০) ও মনিকোঠা গ্রামের শেখ পাঞ্জু হোসেন (৩৬) এ দু’জনের পাওনা টাকা নিয়ে প্রায় তিন মাস আগে এক সালিশ বৈঠক অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। উপজেলা মুক্তিযোদ্ধা কমপ্লেক্স ভবনের নিচ তলায় অনুষ্ঠিত সালিশ বৈঠকের সভাপতিত্ব করেন এলাকার গন্যমান্য শাহজাহান মোল্যা। উক্ত সালিশ বৈঠকের সিদ্ধান্ত মোতাবেক গত ৭ সেপ্টেম্বর ক্ষতিগ্রস্থ শেখ পাঞ্জু হোসেনকে সাড়ে তিন লাখ টাকা ফেরত দেওয়ার শর্ত থাকলেও আদম বেপারী পাওনা টাকা ফেরত দেয় নাই। ফলে ওই সালিশ বৈঠকে উপস্থিত স্বাক্ষীগন ও ক্ষতিগ্রস্থ পরিবারের স্বজনরা মিলে গত ১২ সেপ্টেম্বর উপজেলা সদরের দক্ষিন দিকে মেইন রোডের সাথে নজরুল ইসলামের দোকানের সামনে আদম বেপারীকে পেয়ে তারা ক্ষতিগ্রস্থ পাঞ্জু শেখের টাকা ফেরত চায়। এ সময় আদম বেপারীর সাথে সালিশবর্গের বাক বিতন্ডার একপর্যায়ে কিল-ঘুষির ঘটনা ঘটে। এরই জের¡ ধরে ওই আদম বেপারীর ভাই হায়দার লস্কর বাদী হয়ে ফরিদপুর কোর্টে ক্ষতিগ্রস্থ পরিবারের স্বজনদের নামে একটি চাঁদাবাজী মামলার অভযোগ করেছে বলে জানা গেছে। একই সাথে গণমাধ্যমের ফেসবুকে আদম বেপারী হাবিব লস্করের কাছে মোটা অংকের চাঁদা দাবী করে তাকে মারধর করা হয়েছে বলে অভিযোগ তোলে একটি অনলাইন টিভির স্বাক্ষাতকারও প্রচার করা হয়। তাই শনিবার ক্ষতিগ্রস্থ ১০টি পরিবার জড়ো হয়ে আদম বেপারীর বিরুদ্ধে এক মানববন্ধন কর্মসূচি পালন করেছেন।
এ ব্যপারে চরভদ্রাসন থানার অফিসার ইনচার্জ মিন্টু মন্ডল জানান, “ হাবিব লস্করের উপর হামলার ব্যাপারে অত্র থানায় কেউ কোনো অভিযোগ করে নাই”। তবে শনিবার ওই আদম বেপারী হাবিব লস্কর বলেন, “আমার বিরুদ্ধে আনীত অভিযোগ মিথ্যা। সালিশ বৈঠকের সিদ্ধান্ত মোতাবেক বালিয়া ডাঙ্গী গ্রামের শেখ ইমরান হোসেন এর বিষয়ে আমার কাছ থেকে যে ৯০ হাজার টাকা নেওয়া হয়েছে। সেই ইমরান হোসেন আজও সৌদী আরব দেশে কাজ করে চলেছেন। আর যাকে কেন্দ্র করে মারামারির ঘটনা ঘটেছে সেই শেখ পাঞ্জু হোসেন আদম অফিসের ফোনটি সময়মত ধরে নাই এবং তাদের নির্দেশমত কাজ করে নাই ফলে সে প্রায় এক বছর ধরে ভোগান্তির শিকার হচ্ছে”।
মানববন্ধন কর্মসূচীর সভাপতি ও চরভদ্রাসন ইউপি চেয়ারম্যান মোঃ আজাদ খান জানান, “ আমার জানামতে আদম বেপারী হাবিব লস্কর শতাধিক লোকের কাছ থেকে ভিসা কপি দেখিয়ে মোটা অংকের অর্থ হাতিয়ে নিয়েছে।
তিনি বলেন, হাবিব লস্কর বিদেশের নাম করে অর্থ আত্মসাতের বিরুদ্ধে আমার অফিসে ১৫টি লিখিত অভিযোগ রয়েছে। মাত্র একটি অভিযোগ সুরাহা করতে পেরেছি বাকীগুলো হাবিব লস্কর আমার নোটিশ অমান্য করে অফিসে হাজিরা দিতে পারবে না বলে সাফ জানিয়ে দিয়েছে। এ মানববন্ধনে অংশগ্রহনকারী ক্ষতিগ্রস্থ পরিবারের মধ্যে উপজেলার দবিররদ্দিন প্রামানিকের ডাঙ্গী গ্রামের ফজল শেখের ছেলে বাদল শেখের কাছ থেকে দুই দফায় নগদ ওই আদম বেপারী নগদ ৭ লাখ ৬৭ হাজার টাকা, মনিকোঠা গ্রামের শেখ পাঞ্জু হোসেনের কাছ থেকে নগ ৪ লাখ ৪৫ হাজার টাকা, বালিয়া ডাঙ্গী গ্রামের শেখ জৈনদ্দিনের ছেলে শেখ লিটনের কাছ থেকে নগদ সাড়ে ৪ লাখ টাকা, ফাজেলখার ডাঙ্গী গ্রামের মৃত আইয়ুব খানের ছেলে আরিফ খানের কাছ থেকে সাড়ে ৪ লাখ টাকা, হাজীডাঙ্গী গ্রামের শেখ আবদুর রাজ্জাকের ছেলে ইউসুপ রানার কাছ থেকে নগদ সাড়ে ৪ লাখ টাকা, টিলার চর গ্রামের মৃত সাহেদ বিশ্বাসের ছেলে মামুন বিশ্বাসের কাছ থেকে নগদ ৪ লাখ ৩০ হাজার টাকা, ওই গ্রামের শেখ পারভেজের কাছ থেকে ৪ লাখ ৩০ হাজার টাকা, চরবিষ্ণুপুর গ্রামের হালিম ফকিরের ছেলে মামুন ফকিরের কাছ থেকে ৫ লাখ টাকা ও বালিয়া ডাঙ্গী গ্রামের কাজেম মন্ডলের ছেে জাবেদ মন্ডলের কাছ থেকে সাড়ে ৪ লাখ টাকা ওই আদম বেপারী হাতিয়ে নিয়েছেন বলেও অভিযোগ রয়েছে।

সম্মেলনে ভার্চ্যুয়ালী প্রধান অতিথি হিসেবে বক্তব্যে রাখেন বাংলাদেশ আওয়ামীলীগের সাধারণ সম্পাদক, সড়ক ও সেতু মন্ত্রী ওবায়দুল কাদের এমপি। এসময় তিনি বলেন,বিএনপির রাজনীতি হত্যার রাজনীতি, সন্ত্রাসের রাজনীতি। বিএনপির রাজনীতি সাম্প্রদায়িকতার রাজনীতি। আপনারা নরসিংদীর জনগণ সারাদেশের জনগণের মত বঙ্গবন্ধু কন্যা জননেত্রী শেখ হাসিনার প্রতি আস্তা রাখুন। বিএনপির আগুন সন্ত্রাস দমনের জন্য যা যা করা দরকার আমরা তাই করবো। কারণ, এ দেশের স্বাধীনতার জন্য বহু দামাল ছেলেরা রক্ত দিয়েছে। দীর্ঘ নয় মাসের মুক্তিযুদ্ধে এদেশের ত্রিশ লক্ষ শহীদের রক্তের বিনিময়ে এ দেশ স্বাধীন হয়েছে। বঙ্গবন্ধু সে দিন আমাদের জন্য অসাধ্যকে সাধন করে দিয়েছেন। বহু ত্যাগের বিনিময়ে এ দেশ যখন উন্নয়নের দিকে এগিয়ে যাচ্ছিল ঠিক তখনই ১৯৭৫ সালের ১৫ আগস্ট পাকিস্তানের প্রেসক্রিপশনে খন্দকার মোস্তাক আহমেদ গংদের নেতৃত্বে রাতের আঁধারে বঙ্গবন্ধু ও তাঁর স্ব-পরিবারকে নির্মমভাবে হত্যা করা হয়েছিল। মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী জননেত্রী শেখ হাসিনার নেতৃত্বে আবারো যখন দেশ এগিয়ে যাচ্ছে, ঠিক এ সময়ই আওয়ামী লীগের বিরুদ্ধে জামায়াত-বিএনপিরা নতুন ষড়যন্ত্রে মেতে উঠেছে।

Harijans allege non-payment of student and elderly allowances

The beneficiaries say that our children are studying in various schools and colleges of the upazila, due to which our children are having to pay the cost of food.

Only that is why our Harijans and backward communities are not getting allowance, even for two years, it is difficult for us to get allowance and family. We have given a written request to the upazila executive officer for three months but he has not taken any incentive till today.

Social Service Officer Hasan Sadiq Mahmud says, they have started getting it again. It has not been possible for two years. It is the end of the financial year, because of this before I came. These money was in the bank, it will be manually given to GDP. Give this money. When asked if there is a chance, he said, ’If you want to give it, you will need a sign of UNO sir. After the end of the financial year, it will have to be given on the instructions of the higher authorities. If they give in writing, then we can give it. And they have started getting the GDP again."
