1200 km of unpaved roads damaged in Kamalnagar this season

Lakshmipur: In Kamalnagar, Lakshmipur, the current season's heavy rains and the rising tide of the Meghna River have caused more or less damage to 1,235 kilometers of internal dirt roads out of about 800 listed roads in 9 unions of the upazila; currently, several roads are in a poor condition.

Lakshmipur coastal district. Kamalnagar upazila is affected by Meghna river erosion. The coast is unprotected due to the lack of a dam on the Meghna bank here. Due to this, vast areas are submerged in water almost every day during the monsoon season due to strong tides. In addition, the unpaved roads of the upazila have been damaged due to the excessive rain this time.

Almost all the Meghna coastal unions including Patarirhat, Char Falkon, Saheberhat, Char Kalkini, Char Martin and Char Lawrence in the upazila. Due to the lack of embankments, a large area of this township is flooded with tidal water almost every day during the monsoon season. During this time, most of the coastal roads are submerged under water. This has caused extensive damage to the internal dirt roads. Meanwhile, in addition to the tidal wave, the roads of Char Kadira, Torabganj and Hazirhat unions in the upazila have been damaged due to heavy rains.

After visiting some roads on the spot, it was seen that the soil on both sides of the road has shifted due to high tide and heavy rain. Small and big holes have formed on the road and it has broken. Now, even with a little rain, water and mud accumulate and become unusable. This is causing suffering to the locals.

Locals said that this time there was heavy rain. During the monsoon, the tidal pressure on the Meghna River was also high. Since there was no dam, the tidal water would flood the roads almost every day. The water also reached the houses, trampling the houses. This caused extensive damage to houses, roads and crops.

Hazirhat Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Nizam Uddin and Torabganj Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Faisal Ahmed Ratan said that the work done on the internal roads of their unions in the past has been extensively damaged in the heavy rains of the current monsoon season. The damaged roads need to be repaired on an urgent basis.

Kamalnagar Upazila Awami League General Secretary and Patarirhat Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Advocate Nurul Amin Raju said that almost all the roads in his union, including Patarirhat Road, Fishghat Road, Khairhat Road, Lechki Road and Garighata Road, were damaged in the rain and tide. He said that he will make a list of all those roads and inform the Upazila Project Implementation Officer.

According to sources from the Kamalnagar Upazila Project Implementation (PIO) Office, construction and renovation work has been carried out on about 1,235 kilometers of the 800 listed roads in the upazila at different times under the program for the very poor, LGSP, TR, Kabikha, Kabita and DANIDA. Public representatives, political leaders and local consumers are submitting lists stating that most of the roads have been damaged in the current season's heavy rains and tides. Upazila Project Implementation Officer (PIO) Md. Borhan Uddin said that a list of damaged roads is being prepared. This matter will be reported to the higher authorities. Hopefully, the damaged roads will be renovated as soon as possible.
