9 fishermen sentenced to prison in Ramgati for Hilsa poaching

A mobile court has sentenced nine fishermen to one month in prison for violating the ban on catching mother hilsa fish in the Meghna River in Ramgati, Lakshmipur, during the hilsa breeding season.

On Sunday (October 1) afternoon, Ramgati Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Mobile Court Executive Magistrate Asgar Ali sentenced each fisherman to one month in prison. During this time, 20,000 meters of electricity network were set on fire.

Those sentenced to prison are Md. Siraj, Md. Dulal, A. Motaleb, Nur Alam, Md. Helal, Raihan, Md. Ershad, Hanif and Ibrahim. They are residents of Ramgati area of Noakhali and Laxmipur.

Ramgati Upazila Assistant Fisheries Officer Md. Kamal Uddin said that in the morning, the police, coast guard and fisheries department led by Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Azgar Ali conducted a drive in the Chargajaria area of the Meghna River. During this, 9 fishermen were arrested for fishing in violation of the law. 1 boat and 20,000 meters of current net were seized. The seized nets were set on fire and destroyed. Later, the arrested fishermen were produced before a mobile court and each of them was sentenced to one month in prison.




Hilsa fishing and sale banned from midnight tonight

Dhaka:

The harvesting, transportation, storage, marketing or sale of hilsa is being banned across the country from midnight (12am) on Saturday (September 30). The ban will remain in place until October 22.

Anyone who violates this ban will be punished with a minimum of one year to a maximum of two years of rigorous imprisonment or a fine of up to Tk 5,000, or both. A notification in this regard was issued by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock on September 19.

It states that according to the Protection and Conservation Fish Act, 1950, the harvesting, transportation, storage, marketing or sale of hilsa has been banned across the country for a total of 22 days (16 Ashwin to 7 Kartik), the main breeding season of hilsa, from October 1 to 22 this year.

The ban period was increased by seven days last year to 22 days. Earlier, it was 15 days. Before 2015, the ban period for catching hilsa was 11 days. It is learnt that anyone who disobeys this order will face a minimum of one year to a maximum of two years of rigorous imprisonment or a fine of up to Tk 5,000, or both.

An official said that this year, the main breeding season will be on the first full moon day of the Ashwin month, and 22 days including the 4 days before and 17 days after it, during the lunar month of Ashwin, which is the month of the moon. This time, the first full moon is on October 5.




Lakshmipur's talented student Syed Rashed Hasan Chowdhury wins gold medal in Turkey

Lakshmipur: A meritorious student of Dhaka University, Syed Rashed Hasan Chowdhury, a meritorious student from Bangladesh studying at Ankara University in Turkey, has received a gold medal for reciting the Quran in Turkey.
He was awarded the gold medal at a ceremony titled 'Return to the Religion and Culture of the Ottoman Sultanate' in Khirshehri, Turkey on September 23.
It is reported that this talented student was specially invited from Ankara, the capital of Turkey, to recite the Quran at the event. He recited the Quran at the event. Everyone present was impressed. He won a gold medal. Top government officials and leaders of various political parties were present at the event. He was also invited to Friday prayers at the Central Mosque of Khirshehri, Turkey. There, he recited the Quran before and after the prayers.
Syed Rashed Hasan Chowdhury is the son of Maulana Ali Hossain, the principal of Matabbar Nagar Madrasa in Kamalnagar Upazila of Lakshmipur and the president of the Upazila Imam Samiti. He obtained the Dean's Merit List of Honor Award degree from the Islamic Studies Department of Dhaka University for his excellent results in undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Later, he was nominated for higher education at Ankara University on a scholarship from the Turkish government. In addition, he has presented his research papers at conferences in different countries of the world. His research work has already been published in various international journals in Türkiye, Cyprus, Poland, the Netherlands and Hungary.




Human chain formed to protest attack on journalist in Lakshmipur

শনিবার সকালে হাসপাতালে আহত সাংবাদিক রফিকুল ইসলাম ও স্থানীয় সূত্রে জানা যায়, সদর উপজেলা আওয়ামীলীগের সাধারন সম্পাদক ও উত্তর জয়পুর ইউনিয়ন পরিষদের চেয়ারম্যান আবুল কাশেম চৌধুরী এবং তার ইউনিয়ন পরিষদের বিভিন্ন প্রকল্পের অনিয়ম ও দূর্নীতি নিয়ে স্থানীয় দৈনিক লক্ষ্মীপুর কন্ঠ ও জাতীয় পত্রিকায় একাধিক সংবাদ প্রকাশিত হয়।
এ ঘটনার জের ধরে শুক্রবার দুপুরে চেয়ারম্যান আবুল কাশেম চৌধুরী মোবাইল ফোনে তার বাড়িতে সাংবাদিক রফিককে ডেকে নয়। এ সময় চেয়ারম্যান ও তার লোকজন সাংবাদিক রফিকুল ইসলামকে পিটিয়ে গুরুতর আহত করে। পরে গুরুতর আহত অবস্থায় তাকে উদ্ধার করে সদর হাসপাতালে ভর্তি করেন স্থানীয়রা।

এ দিকে সম্প্রতি মুক্তিযোদ্ধা নুর মোহাম্মদকে একই কায়দায় তার ইউনিয়ন পরিষদ কার্যালয়ে ডেকে নিয়ে বেদম মারধর করে টয়লেটে আটকিয়ে রাখে আবুল কাশেম চৌধুরী।
সাংবাদিক রফিকুল ইসলামের উপর হামলার ঘটনায় জেলায় কর্মরত সংবাদকর্মীরা তীব্র নিন্দা ও ক্ষোভ জানিয়ে ঘটনার সাথে জড়িত চেয়ারম্যান ও তার বাহিনীর সন্ত্রাসীদের গ্রেফতারের দাবী জানান।

হামলার ঘটনায় সদর উপজেলা আওয়ামীলীগের সাধারন সম্পাদক ও উত্তর জয়পুর ইউনিয়ন পরিষদের চেয়ারম্যান আবুল কাশেম চৌধুরীর সাথে একাধিকবার মোবাইল ফোনে যোগাযোগ করা হলেও তিনি ফোন রিসিভ করেনি।

এ ব্যাপারে পুলিশ সুপার আ স ম মাহাতাব উদ্দিন জানান, অভিযোগ পেলে তদন্তপূর্বক আইনগত ব্যবস্থা নেয়া হবে।

 




Journalist harassed with false case in Lakshmipur

An allegation has been made against Mohiuddin Suman, the scoundrel son of Haji Nurul Islam of Dhangazi Hawladar Bari in ITiatoli village of Sadar upazila, for filing a false and baseless harassment case against journalist Ismail Hossain Jabu, who was the executive editor of the national daily Khabor and the local daily Manab Kalyan while performing his professional duties in Lakshmipur.

It is learned that last Sunday (September 17), Sumon tried to forcibly occupy 13 percent of the land of his two brothers Kamal and expatriate Akter Hossain in 804 plots of land with 4 khatians in Atiatoli Mouza No. 88 under Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila. At that time, Ismail Hossain Jabu and some journalists went to the spot after receiving the news. When they took pictures on camera, Sumon became angry and at one point he was beaten up. In order to prevent these incidents from being reported, he filed a false case against the journalists. There are allegations of terrorism, extortion and various misdeeds against Sumon in the area. In addition, there are allegations against him that he is harassing the helpless and innocent people of the area by giving various false garlands.

Journalist Ismail Hossain Jabu said that terrorist Sumon went to forcibly occupy the land of his two brothers Kamal and expatriate Akter Hossain. At that time, some journalists along with me received the news and went to the spot and took pictures of the forcible occupation of the land, and Sumon became angry and filed a false and harassing case to cover up the incident.
After searching the area, it was found that there are 8/10 cases against him, including terrorism and extortion. Moreover, he is harassing people by filing false cases. The journalist demanded that legal action be taken against Sumon by conducting a proper investigation into this matter and uncovering the real facts.

It was not possible to obtain Suman's statement on this matter as his mobile phone was switched off.

 




Jubo League leader's indecent behavior with chairman in Kamalnagar, protest in protest

The local people have staged a protest against the indecent behavior of Hazirhat Union Parishad (UP) Chairman and Upazila Awami League Senior Vice President Nizam Uddin and Upazila Jubo League Joint Convener Ahsan Ullah Hiron in Kamalnagar Upazila of Lakshmipur.

A protest procession took out at Hazirhat Bazaar in Kamalnagar Upazila Sadar on Thursday (September 28) afternoon. The procession started from the UP office and circled the market. Local leaders and activists, UP members and people from different walks of life participated in it. Later, they met at the Union Parishad office for a protest rally.

Hazirhat Union Parishad Chairman Nizam Uddin, District Parishad member and Jubo League leader Rigyas Uddin Molla, Upazila Awami League Publicity Secretary Md. UP Chairman Nizam Uddin said that in the last Zilla Parishad election, Jubo League leader Hiron was a candidate. He has been angry since he was not voted for in that election and lost the election. On the night of Wednesday (September 27), Abdullah Al Mamun, MP from Lakshmipur-4 (Ramgati-Kamalnagar) constituency, went to visit the puja mandap. During this time, he behaved indecently and used obscene language over a trivial incident. Due to which the local people and party leaders and activists staged a protest and rally.

Upazila Jubo League joint convener Ahsan Ullah Hiron said that UP Chairman Nizam Uddin pushed Kamalnagar Upazila Jubo League former president Fazlul Haque Sabuj while he was visiting the puja pavilion. There was an argument with him over this incident. The matter of indecent behavior is not true.

Lakshmipur: A rally and discussion meeting were held in Lakshmipur to mark International Right to Information Day.
On Thursday (September 28) morning, a colorful rally was organized by the Conscious Citizens Committee (Snac) and in collaboration with the district administration to mark the day.
The rally started from the Sadar Upazila Parishad premises and ended in front of the Collectorate building.
Later, a discussion meeting was held in the District Commissioner's conference room.
Deputy Commissioner Homayra Begum was the chief guest at the event, chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Murshidul Islam.
Local Government Deputy Director Mir Shawkat Hossain, Additional Superintendent of Police Anirban Chakma, Sadar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Mohammad Nuruzzaman and District Information Officer Abdullah Al Mamun were present.




A-League-Jubeir League face off in Kamalnagar in presence of MP

A clash broke out between the Awami League and Jubo League in Kamalnagar, Laxmipur, over the sitting at a puja mandap in the presence of an MP. The incident took place at around 8:45 pm on Wednesday (September 27) in Hazirhat Bazar in front of Hazirhat Sri Sri Hari Narayan Sevashram in the upazila. Police present at the spot brought the situation under control.

The incident has caused pent-up anger among market traders, worshippers and the general public. However, eyewitnesses said that tensions have been rising between the Awami League and the Jubo League.

Abdullah Al Mamun, MP for Lakshmipur-4 (Ramgati-Kamalnagar) constituency, visited the Hazirhat Bazar Puja Mandap.
At that time, Upazila A'League Senior Vice President and Hazirhat Union Parishad Chairman Md. Nizam Uddin suddenly pushed him with both hands. Later, after the event, Fazlul Haque Sabuj and Jubo League joint convener Ahsan Ullah Hiron informed the MP about the matter.
During this time, UP Chairman Md. Nizam Uddin, Haji Harun Rashid and Jubo League leader Hiron had an argument, inappropriate behavior and a fight between them, which was controlled by the police present.
Meanwhile, Kamalnagar Upazila AL Senior Vice President and Hazirhat Union Parishad Chairman Md. Nizam Uddin denied the incident.
He said, "No such incident of Sabuj and Hiran has happened to me."
Multiple attempts to contact Lakshmipur-4 (Ramgati-Kamalnagar) MP Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun on mobile phone to inquire about the incident were unsuccessful.
