A court has sentenced three friends to life imprisonment for killing a young man named Mehraj Hossain by drugging him and then tying a belt around his neck in Lakshmipur.

At the same time, they were ordered to pay a fine of 10,000 taka and, in default, to serve another year in prison.

District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Rahibul Islam delivered the verdict on Tuesday (October 25) afternoon.

Lakshmipur Judge Court Public Prosecutor (PP) Jasim Uddin confirmed the matter and said that Mehraj was killed over a love affair with a girl. The accused were present in the court during the verdict.

The convicts are Abdullah Al Mamun, Sajib Ahmed and Tanvir Hossain Bijoy. Mamun is the son of Md. Yusuf of Uttar Hooghly village under Sudharam police station in Noakhali, Sajib is the son of Nurul Islam of Matahapur village under the same police station, and Bijoy is the son of Shahidul Islam of Rawal Diya village.

রামগঞ্জ উপজেলার বিভিন্ন এলাকায় সকাল থেকে থেমে থেমে বৃষ্টি ও বৈরী আবহাওয়ায় জনজীবন থমকে গেছে। বিপাকে পড়েছে এ অঞ্চলের নিম্ন আয়ের মানুষ। আবহাওয়া অফিসের তথ্যমতে, শক্তি বাড়িয়ে গভীর নিম্নচাপে রূপ নিয়ে আজ সোমবার (২৪ অক্টোবর) রাতে ঘূর্ণিঝড়ে পরিণত হবে। যার নামকরণ করা হয়েছে ‘সিত্রাং’। আগামী মঙ্গলবার (২৫ অক্টোবর) ভোরের দিকে এটি বাংলাদেশের ওপর দিয়ে অতিক্রম করতে পারে বলেও জানান আবহাওয়াবিদরা।

তাই এনিয়ে রামগঞ্জ উপজেলা প্রশাসনের উদ্যোগে ২৪(অক্টোবর) সোমবার বেলা ২ টায় এক জরুরি সভা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।

আবহাওয়া অফিস সুত্রে জানাযায়, সাগরে সৃষ্ট নিম্নচাপটি আরও শক্তিশালী হয়ে গভীর নিম্নচাপে পরিণত হয়ে ঘূর্ণিঝড়ে রূপ নিতে পারে।

এটি আরও শক্তিশালী হলে ২৪ ও ২৫ অক্টোবর লক্ষ্মীপুর জেলার সবকয়টি উপজেলা আঘাত হানতে পারে।
লক্ষ্মীপুর জেলায় ৭ নম্বর স্থানীয় বিপদ সংকেত দেখানো হয়েছে। এখনও বাতাসের গতিবেগ ঘণ্টায় ৫০ থেকে ৬০ কিমি রয়েছে। যদি ঘণ্টায় ৭৫ থেকে ৮০ কিলোমিটার হয়, তাহলে এটি সাইক্লোনে রূপ নেবে। পরিস্থিতি বুঝে তখন সংকেত আরো বাড়ানো হবে।

এসময় উপজেলা  নির্বাহী কর্মকর্তা উম্মে হাবিবা মীরা সরকারি সকল  কর্মকর্তাগণকে প্রস্তুত থাকার নির্দেশ দিয়ে বলেন, অবস্থার অবনতি হলে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হতে পারে এমন লোকজনদের  যাতে সাইক্লোন শেল্টারে আশ্রয় দেওয়া যায়। তাই সাইক্লোন শেল্টারে প্রস্তুত রাখার জন্য।

জরুরি সভায় উপজেলা নির্বাহী কর্মকর্তা উম্মে হাবিবা মীরার সভাপতিত্বে উপস্থিত ছিলেন  রামগঞ্জ থানার অফিসার ইনচার্জ মোহাম্মদ এমদাদুল হক, পৌর মেয়র আবুল খায়ের পাটোয়ারী, উপজেলা ভাইস চেয়ারম্যান দেলোয়ার হোসেন দেওয়ান বাচ্চু,রামগঞ্জ প্রেসক্লাবের সভাপতি সাখাওয়াত হোসেন জাহাঙ্গীর সহ উপজেলার বিভিন্ন দপ্তরের কর্মকর্তা গন।

Cyclone 'Sitrang', which formed in the Bay of Bengal, is rapidly approaching Bangladesh. According to weather forecasters, it will hit the coast this evening.

The cyclone has already transformed into a severe cyclone.

When asked how far Sitrang is from the coast at the moment, meteorologist Md. Omar Faruk said that it is rapidly approaching the Bangladesh coast. Currently (as of 3 pm), Sitrang is 335 kilometers away from Payra Port.

Due to the impact of Cyclone Sitrang, moderate to heavy rainfall and gusty winds have been blowing in the coastal district of Jhalokati since Monday morning.

Due to the strong winds and storms and rains since morning, low-lying areas of many villages in the district have been submerged in water.

Nearly fifty villages in Kathalia Upazila have been submerged in water. The Amua embankment has been damaged.

Deputy Commissioner Johar Ali said that there is no dry food stock for relief in the district. However, there is cash and all other arrangements. Shelter centers have been prepared to shelter 4 lakh people.

More than 400 shelters, including 61 cyclone shelters, have been prepared. In addition, all kinds of preparations are being made, including multiple emergency teams and dry food.

The Meteorological Department has said that Cyclone Sitrang, which formed in the Bay of Bengal, will hit the coastal districts of Bangladesh.

In this situation, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has instructed those concerned to make all-out preparations to deal with the possible damage from the cyclone.

The government news agency reported this on Monday (October 24) afternoon, citing the Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim.

Immediately after Cyclone Sitrang was forecast to hit the country's coastal areas on Tuesday, the Prime Minister has been receiving information from field-level officials and has given all necessary instructions to the concerned officials to minimize the loss of life and property due to the storm.

Cyclone Sitrang, which is at sea, is located 335 kilometers south-southwest of the Payra seaport, the Meteorological Department said.

It is also located 395 kilometers southwest of Cox's Bazar seaport and 440 kilometers southwest of Chittagong seaport, the agency said.

This information was given in the Meteorological Department's special warning No. 9 at noon today, Monday (October 24).

The warning states that Cyclone 'Sitrang', which is located in the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjacent west-central Bay of Bengal and north Bay of Bengal areas, is moving north-northeastwards and is located in the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjacent northeast Bay of Bengal areas (latitude: 19.2° North, longitude: 89.2° East).

It was located 440 km southwest of Chittagong Seaport, 395 km southwest of Cox's Bazar Seaport, 365 km south-southwest of Mongla Seaport and 335 km south-southwest of Payra Seaport at 12 noon today (October 24, 2022). It is likely to intensify further and move north-northeastwards and cross the Barisal-Chittagong coast near Khepupara by midnight today/early tomorrow morning.

ঘূর্ণিঝড় সিত্রাং নিয়ে সোমবার (২৪ অক্টোবর) সচিবালয়ে এক  ব্রিফিংয়ে সাংবাদিকদের তিনি একথা জানান।

তিনি বলেন, ঘূর্ণিঝড় সিত্রাং সিভিয়ার সাইক্লোনে রূপান্তরিত  হয়েছে। আবহাওয়াবিদের তথ্য অনুযায়ী, আজ সন্ধ্যায় এটি আঘাত হানবে। আগামীকাল মঙ্গলবার ভোর ৬টা থেকে ৭টার মধ্যে উপকূল অতিক্রম  করবে।

তিনি আরও বলেন, সিত্রাং  বাংলাদেশে আঘাত হানবে। ভারতে আঘাত হানার সম্ভাবনা নেই। সব থেকে বেশি আঘাত  হানবে বরগুনা এবং পটুয়াখালী।

বাগেরহাটের উপকূলে সোমবার সকাল থেকে শুরু হয়েছে ভারি বৃষ্টি, সঙ্গে ঝড়ো হাওয়া। মোংলা বন্দরে জারি করা হয়েছে ৭ নম্বর সংকেত। নিরাপদ আশ্রয়ে যেতে মাইকিং চলছে।

ঘূর্ণিঝড় সিত্রাংয়ের প্রভাবে উপকূলীয় জেলা বাগেরহাটে গতরাত ভর হালকা থেকে মাঝারি ধরনের বৃষ্টিপাত হয়েছে। সময় বাড়ার সাথে সোমবার সকাল থেকে ভারিবৃষ্টি ও ঝড়োবাতাস বইছে। সিত্রাং মোকাবেলায় সব ধরনের প্রস্তুতি নিয়েছে বাগেরহাট প্রশাসন।গতকাল বিকেলে দূযোগ কমিটির সভায়

জেলা প্রশাসক মোহাম্মদ আজিজুর রহমান জানান, ৩৪৪ আশ্রয় কেন্দ্র প্রস্তুত রয়েছে। নির্দেশনা পাওয়া মাত্রই ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ এলাকার মানুষদের আশ্রয়কেন্দ্রে নেওয়ার ব্যবস্থা করা হবে। এছাড়া ২৯৮ মেট্রিকটন চাল ও নগদ চার লাখ ৮০ হাজার টাকা উপকূলীয় উপজেলার জন্য বরাদ্দ দেওয়া হয়েছে।

কোস্টগার্ড পশ্চিম জোন মোংলার স্টাফ অফিসার (অপারেশন) লে. কমান্ডার মো মহিউদ্দিন জামান বলেন, উপকূলীয় অঞ্চলের মানুষকে সাবধান করতে মাইকিং করা হচ্ছে।

তাদের নিরাপদে থাকতে অনুরোধ করা হচ্ছে। এদিকে মাছ ধরার জন্য২৮ তারিখ পযন্ত  নিষেধাজ্ঞা থাকায় সমুদ্রগামি ট্রলার গুলো ও শত শত জেলে নিরাপদে রয়েছে। বাগেরহাটের প্রধান ম্যসৎ অবতরণ কেন্দ্র কেবি বাজার সংলগ্ন ভৈরব নদীতে অনেক ট্রলার নোঙর করে রয়েছে।

বৃষ্টি  ঝড়ো হাওয়ার জন্য জেলা শহরের রাস্তা ঘাট অনেকটাই ফাঁকা। জরুরী প্রয়োজন এর মধ্যেও কিছু মানুষকে ছাতা নিয়ে বের হতে দেখা গেছে।

তবে আমবশ্যার সাথে ঘুনিঝড় হওয়ায় বাগেরহাটের উপকুলের  মানুষের মধ্যে জলোচ্ছ্বাসের ঝুঁকির মধ্যে  আতংক বিরাজ করছে।

The impact of cyclone Sitrang may cause heavy rain in seven parts of the country. So due to rain, Chittagong may be hit by a heavy rain.

It is said that due to the effect of Cyclone Sitrang, heavy (44-88 mm) to very heavy (more than 89 mm) in many places of Chittagong, Barisal, Khulna, Dhaka, Rajshahi, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions may occur in the hilly areas of Chittagong Division.

‘Sitrang’ is near the coast of Bangladesh and Mongla and Patra port have already been asked to show the number 7 outbreak signal and Chittagong and Cox's Bazar seaports are being asked to show the number 6.

According to the Meteorological Directorate, the maximum wind speed is 62 km per hour within 54 km of the cyclone center, which has reached up to 88 km in the form of gusty winds and is in a state near the cyclone center.

Lower areas of islands and chars can be flooded with high tides more than 5-8 feet higher than normal tides.
