ওই সময় পাকিস্তান জুড়ে প্রেসিডেন্ট নির্বাচনের ডামাডোল। একদিকে প্রেসিডেন্ট আইয়ুব খান, অন্যদিকে সম্মিলিতবিরোধী দলের প্রার্থী মোহাম্মদ আলী জিন্নাহর বোন ফাতেমা জিন্নাহ। অনিশ্চয়তা আর অন্ধকারের মধ্যেও এ অঞ্চলের মানুষ স্বাধীনতার স্বপ্ন দেখছে। যিনি এই স্বপ্নের বাস্তবায়ন ঘটিয়ে বাঙালি জাতিকে এনে দেবেন মুক্তির স্বাদ, বাঙালির সেই অবিসংবাদিত নেতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের ঘর আলো করে জন্ম নিল এক শিশু।১৯৬৪ সালের ১৮ অক্টোবর ধানমন্ডির ৩২ নম্বর সড়কে বঙ্গবন্ধুর ঐতিহাসিক বাড়িতে শেখ রাসেলের জন্ম। রাসেলের যেদিন জন্ম হয় বঙ্গবন্ধু সেদিন ফাতেমা জিন্নাহর পক্ষে প্রচারে অংশগ্রহণের জন্য চট্টগ্রামে অবস্থান করছিলেন। জন্মের সময় বাবা কাছে না থাকলেও ১৯৭৫ সালের ১৫ আগস্ট পিতা-পুত্রের চিরপ্রস্থান ঘটেছে একসঙ্গেই।

ছোট ছেলের রাসেল নামটি রেখেছিলেন বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান নিজেই। তার প্রিয় লেখক ছিলেন পৃথিবী বিখ্যাত ব্রিটিশ দার্শনিক সাহিত্যে নোবেল পুরস্কারপ্রাপ্ত বার্ট্রান্ড রাসেল। বঙ্গবন্ধু পরিবারের সর্বকনিষ্ঠ সদস্যের নাম রাখা হলো রাসেল। শেখ রাসেল। এই নামটিকে ঘিরে নিশ্চয়ই বঙ্গবন্ধুর মহৎ কোনো স্বপ্ন বা আকাক্সক্ষা ছিল।শিশু রাসেলের ভুবন ছিল তার পিতা-মাতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান ও শেখ ফজিলাতুন্নেছা মুজিব, বোন শেখ হাসিনা ও শেখ রেহানা এবং ভাই শেখ কামাল ও শেখ জামালকে ঘিরে। তাদের সবার ভালোবাসার ধন ছিল ছোট্ট রাসেল। রাসেলের জীবনের বেশির ভাগ সময়ই কেটেছে বাবা মুজিবের সান্নিধ্য ছাড়া। কারণ, বাবা মুজিব বন্দি হয়ে কারাগারে ছিলেন দিনের পর দিন। শেখ রাসেল বেশ কয়েকবারই কারাগারে বঙ্গবন্ধুর সঙ্গে দেখা করেছে। তবে তার প্রথম কারাগার দেখা ১৯৬৬ সালের ৮ মে। পিতা গ্রেপ্তার হওয়ার পর।

কারাগারে দেখা করার সময় রাসেল কিছুতেই তার বাবাকে রেখে আসতে চাইত না। এ কারণে তার মন খারাপ থাকত। কারাগারের রোজনামচায় ১৯৬৬ সালের ১৫ জুন দিনলিপিতে রাসেলকে নিয়ে বঙ্গবন্ধু লিখেছেন, ‘১৮ মাসের রাসেল জেল অফিসে এসে একটুও হাসে না- যে পর্যন্ত আমাকে না দেখে। দেখলাম দূর থেকে পূর্বের মতোই আব্বা আব্বা বলে চিৎকার করছে।

জেল গেট দিয়ে একটা মালবোঝাই ট্রাক ঢুকেছিল। আমি তাই জানালায় দাঁড়াইয়া ওকে আদর করলাম। একটু পরেই ভেতরে যেতেই রাসেল আমার গলা ধরে হেসে দিল। ওরা বলল আমি না আসা পর্যন্ত শুধু জানালার দিকে চেয়ে থাকে, বলে আব্বার বাড়ি। এখন ধারণা হয়েছে এটা ওর আব্বার বাড়ি। যাওয়ার সময় হলে ওকে ফাঁকি দিতে হয়।’

শিশু রাসেল ছিল অভিমানী। এ নিয়ে বঙ্গবন্ধু নিজেই লিখেছেন কারাগারের রোজনামচায়। ১৯৬৭ সালের ১৪-১৫ এপ্রিল অন্যান্য প্রসঙ্গ ছাড়াও বঙ্গবন্ধু রাসেলকে নিয়ে লিখেছেন, ‘জেল গেটে যখন উপস্থিত হলাম ছোট ছেলেটা আজ আর বাইরে এসে দাঁড়াইয়া নাই দেখে আশ্চর্যই হলাম। আমি যখন রুমের ভেতর যেয়ে ওকে কোলে করলাম আমার গলা ধরে আব্বা আব্বা করে কয়েকবার ডাক দিয়ে ওর মার কোলে যেয়ে আব্বা আব্বা করে ডাকতে শুরু করল। ওর মাকে আব্বা বলে।’ আমি জিজ্ঞাসা করলাম, ব্যাপার কী? ওর মা বলল, ‘বাড়িতে আব্বা আব্বা করে কাঁদে তাই ওকে বলেছি আমাকে আব্বা বলে ডাকতে। রাসেল আব্বা আব্বা বলে ডাকতে লাগল। যেই আমি জবাব দিই সেই ওর মার গলা ধরে বলে, তুমি আমার আব্বা। আমার ওপর অভিমান করেছে বলে মনে হয়। এখন আর বিদায়ের সময় আমাকে নিয়ে যেতে চায় না।’

শিশু রাসেলকেও কাটাতে হয় বন্দিজীবন। অত্যন্ত কষ্টকর ছিল তার দিনগুলো। তার বন্দিত্ব সম্পর্কে বোন শেখ হাসিনা ‘আমাদের ছোট রাসেল সোনা’ নিবন্ধে লিখেছেন, ‘ছোট্ট রাসেলও বন্দি জীবনযাপন শুরু করে। ঠিকমতো খাবার-দাবার নেই। কোনো খেলনা নেই, বইপত্র নেই, কী কষ্টের দিন যে ওর জন্য শুরু হলো। বন্দিখানায় থাকতে আব্বার কোনো খবর আমরা জানি না। কোথায় আছেন, কেমন আছেন, কিছুই জানি না। প্রথমদিকে রাসেল আব্বার জন্য খুব কান্নাকাটি করত। তার ওপর আদরের কামাল ভাইকে পাচ্ছে না, সেটাও ওর জন্য কষ্টকর।’ (ইতিহাসের মহানায়ক, পৃষ্ঠা ২১)।ছোট থেকে বাবা শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানকে কারাগারে দেখতে দেখতে বড় হওয়া রাসেল অজান্তেই চাপা স্বভাবের হয়ে উঠেছিল। বঙ্গবন্ধুকন্যা প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা সে বিষয়ে বক্তৃতায় বলেন, ‘খুব চাপা স্বভাবের ছিল। সহজে নিজের কিছু বলত না। তার চোখে যখন পানি, চোখে পানি কেন জানতে চাইলে বলত, চোখে যেন কী পড়েছে। ওইটুকু ছোট বাচ্চা, নিজের মনের ব্যথাটা পর্যন্ত কীভাবে লুকিয়ে রাখতে হয় শিখেছিল।’

শেখ রাসেল ছিল বন্ধুবৎসল, গরিবদের জন্য ছিল তার দরদ, মমতা। জাতির পিতার গ্রামের বাড়ি টুঙ্গিপাড়ায় যখন সে যেত তখন গ্রামের ছেলেদের জন্য সে জামা নিয়ে যেত। তাদের উপহার দিত। আজ শেখ রাসেল বেঁচে থাকলে দেশ একজন মানবদরদি মানুষ পেত।

শেখ রাসেলের এই ছোট্ট জীবন আমাদের জন্য অনেক শিক্ষণীয়। প্রথমত, আমাদের শিশুরা যদি শেখ রাসেলকে আদর্শ হিসেবে বিবেচনা করে তার মতো বেড়ে ওঠে, তাহলে আমরা আদর্শ শিশু পাব। যাদের হাত ধরে বিনির্মিত হবে আগামী দিনের চেতনার নাগরিক। শিশুদের তাই শেখ রাসেলের ছোট্ট জীবনটা জানাতে হবে। যাতে শিশুরা অনাবিল সুন্দরের সৌন্দর্যে বেড়ে ওঠে, হাসতে পারে, খেলতে পারে, দুষ্টুমি করতে পারে, বন্ধুত্ব করতে পারে, গরিব মানুষকে ভালোবাসতে পারে। এভাবে যদি প্রতিটি শিশু বেড়ে ওঠে তাহলে এই শিশুরা বড় হয়ে আলোকিত মানুষ হতে পারে। এ কারণেই শেখ রাসেলের জীবন আমাদের জানাটা অত্যন্ত জরুরি।শেখ রাসেল নিজেকে কীভাবে গড়ে তুলত, তা বলার উপায় নেই। তবে পারিবারিক ঐতিহ্য, আদর্শের উত্তরাধিকার তার চরিত্র গঠনে যে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখত, তাতে সন্দেহ নেই। সেই দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে বলা যায়, অন্তত এই দেশ, দেশের মানুষের প্রতি গভীর ভালোবাসা আর দায়িত্ববোধ থাকত তার অন্তর ও চেতনাজুড়ে। পরিণত হয়ে উঠত দায়িত্ব গ্রহণ করার জন্য। তার আগ্রহের বিষয়গুলো আয়ত্ত করে সেখানে তাৎপর্যপূর্ণ অবদান রাখতে পারত। সেটিই স্বাভাবিক ছিল তার জন্য। আজ রাসেল থাকলে একজন মেধাবী মানুষ বাংলাদেশকে এগিয়ে নেওয়ার সংগ্রামে থাকত প্রথম সারিতে।

দুর্ভাগ্য এই যে জীবনের পথ, ইতিহাসের গতিধারা সব সময় স্বাভাবিক সূত্র ধরে এগোয় না। অনভিপ্রেত বহু ঘটনা এসে সেই যাত্রাপথ বিপৎসংকুল করে তোলে, বাঁক ঘুরিয়ে দেয়, ভিন্ন খাতে নিয়ে যায়। তখন আবার সঠিক পথে ফিরতে প্রয়োজন হয় কঠিন সংগ্রামের। ১৯৭৫ সালের ১৫ আগস্টের হত্যাকাণ্ডের ভেতর দিয়ে এমনি এক ভ্রান্ত পথে পরিচালিত করা হয়েছিল এই দেশকে। এরই নির্মম শিকার হয়েছিল শিশু শেখ রাসেল। ফলে তার জন্মদিনটি আনন্দ নয় বরং বেদনাই বয়ে আনে বিবেকবান মানুষের কাছে।

শেখ রাসেলের জন্মদিন ১৮ অক্টোবর ‘জাতীয় দিবস’ হিসেবে পালন করা হচ্ছে। তথ্য ও যোগাযোগ প্রযুক্তি বিভাগ শেখ রাসেল দিবস পালনের প্রস্তাব এবং যৌক্তিকতা মন্ত্রিসভায় পেশ করে। ২৩ আগস্ট ২০২১, মন্ত্রিসভার বৈঠকে শেখ রাসেল দিবস ‘ক’ শ্রেণিভুক্ত দিবস হিসেবে পালনের বিষয়ে অনুমোদন দেওয়া হয়। এর জন্য আমরা আইসিটি বিভাগের পক্ষ থেকে প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনাকে আন্তরিক ধন্যবাদ ও কৃতজ্ঞতা জানাই।শিশু শেখ রাসেলের অকালপ্রয়াণের শোক-দুঃখ কোনো দিনই শেষ হওয়ার নয়। শেখ রাসেলের জন্মদিনে আমাদের কামনা শুধু আমাদের দেশ নয়, সারা পৃথিবীই শিশুদের জন্য নিরাপদ হয়ে উঠুক। হানাহানির অবসান হোক, প্রতিষ্ঠিত হোক চিরকাক্সিক্ষত শান্তি।
