EC bans journalists from using motorcycles‘

Dhaka: The Election Commission (EC) has issued a journalist policy ahead of the upcoming 11th National Parliament elections. It has strengthened measures to prevent journalists from using motorcycles to gather news.

The policy states that journalists can enter the polling station and take photos, videos, and gather information with the permission of the presiding officer. However, multiple journalists cannot enter the same polling booth at the same polling station at the same time. Even live broadcasts or social media coverage from the polling booth are not allowed.

The policy, issued under the signature of Election Commission Joint Secretary (Public Relations Wing) SM Asaduzzaman on December 21, provides more than a dozen guidelines to journalists. The policy also states that action will be taken against the news organization concerned in case of violation or deviation as per the election law, rules and code.

The policy has already been sent to all returning officers for the parliamentary elections. It states that the role of the media in conducting elections in a fair, free and peaceful environment is important. It is necessary to provide assistance so that journalists can easily and without any hindrance collect election news at various times, including on polling day, but this must be done in accordance with the rules and regulations applicable during the election, voting and vote counting. Persons authorized by the Election Commission will be able to enter the polling station. For this, journalists will be provided with special cards from the Election Commission to collect news from the polling station. Returning officers will issue cards for their respective areas. The returning officer can authorize the assistant returning officer to issue cards to journalists from the concerned upazila. In addition, journalists who will go from Dhaka to collect election news in different parts of the country will be given cards by the Election Commission. Journalists and observers can use vehicles approved by the Election Commission and bearing approval indicator stickers. No stickers will be issued for using motorcycles.

This is the first time that journalists have not been given motorcycle stickers. However, stickers will be given if they use other vehicles. The Election Commission has already banned riding motorcycles during voting. In this case, from midnight of December 29 to midnight of January 2, and in some cases for longer periods, there will be a ban on riding motorcycles or similar vehicles. As a result, journalists will not be able to use motorcycles for a total of 4 days before and after voting in the 11th National Parliament election.

Lakshmipur-04, Rab-Manna's fight for dignity

Lakshmipur: Two heavyweight candidates, Rob and Mannan, are contesting the 11th National Parliament election from Lakshmipur-4 (Ramgati-Kamalnagar) constituency. One of them is Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president ASM Abdur Rob, leader of BNP's Oikya Front. The other is Awami League-led grand alliance's Jukta Front leader and Bikalpak Dhara Secretary General Major (retd) Abdul Mannan. They are contesting with the symbols of boat and paddy sheaf.
Awami League candidate Mohammad Abdullah was elected in this constituency on the Meghna coast of the district in the January 5, 2014 election. Earlier, BNP candidate Ashraf Uddin Nijan won the 2001 and 2008 elections. Both of them have been excluded from the party's final nomination due to alliance issues. Now, two leaders of the Oikyafront and the Juktafront are contesting the election. Both of them were former ministers.
ASM Rob has been elected as a member of parliament three times from Lakshmipur-4 (Ramgati-Kamalnagar) constituency. In the 2008 election, Major (Retd.) Abdul Mannan lost the seat by contesting under the Kula symbol of Bikalpak Dhara. In that election, Rob voted under the 'Tara' symbol from JSD. BNP candidate Ashraf Uddin Nijan was elected by defeating both of them. Earlier, Major Mannan was elected from Dhaka-10 constituency in the 1991 and 2001 elections.
If you look at the results of all the past national parliamentary elections, you can see that BNP has a strong position here. That is why it is known as a BNP base. The voters here are not candidates; they vote by looking at the symbol of the paddy sheaf. However, individual voters also have their own vote bank. This leader of the Oikyafront is optimistic about winning the votes of the JSD and BNP alliance.
Meanwhile, Major (Retd.) Abdul Mannan is popular. He has taken initiatives to prevent Meghna River erosion on his own initiative. He has created employment. He has earned quite a reputation in the past by donating to various institutions. However, his party base here is not strong. He has to rely completely on the Awami League.
The candidate with the boat symbol said that since independence, three political parties have formed governments in turn. Analyzing the activities of all governments, it can be seen that the development that has taken place in the country under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina in two consecutive terms is the first in the history of Bangladesh. Therefore, to continue the trend of development and build Bangabandhu's golden Bangladesh, his worthy daughter Sheikh Hasina must be made the head of the government again.
If he wins the election, special projects will be taken up to prevent river erosion in Ramgati and Kamalnagar. A list of poor families will be made and employment will be provided to at least one person from each family. Farmers will be provided with easy access to fertilizers and seeds, and fish conservation and marketing centers will be established for fishermen.
Asam Abdur Rab said, "We must ensure that mothers and sisters can leave their homes safely. We must create a voting revolution by creating a mass awakening on election day."
Lakshmipur-4 consists of eight unions of Ramgati Upazila and nine unions of Kamalnagar Upazila and one municipality. The current voters in this constituency are 310,847. In the last parliamentary election, the total voters were 266,726. Accordingly, the number of voters in this constituency has increased by 44,121 in the last five years.
