সময় যত এগচ্ছে, তত ধীরে ধীরে বদলে যাচ্ছে আমাদের চারপাশ। বদলাচ্ছে রোগের চরিত্রও। তাই তো চিকিৎসাক্ষেত্রেও পরিবর্তন আসছে প্রতিনিয়ত। এই যেমন জোঁক থেরাপির কথাই ধরুণ! কিছুদিন আগে পর্যন্ত যে প্রাণীটিকে আমাদের প্রতিপক্ষ হিসেবে জেনে এসেছে সমগ্র মানবসমাজ, সেই জোঁককে কাজে লাগিয়ে আজকাল সারিয়ে ফেলা সম্ভব হচ্ছে একের পর এক জোটিল রোগ! এই থেরাপির নাম দেওয়া হয়েছে জোঁক থেরাপি।

১. হার্টের রোগের চিকিৎসায় কাজে আসে:
২০১১ সালে হওয়া একটি গবেষণায় দেখা যায় ঠিক পদ্ধতিতে জোঁককে ব্যবহার করলে সারা শরীরে রক্তের প্রবাহ বেড়ে যায়।

২০৩০ সালের মধ্যে সারা বিশ্বে মহামারির আকার নিতে চলা এই মারণ রোগের চিকিৎসায় দারুন কাজে আসে জোঁক। একাধিক গবেষণায় দেখা গেছে চিরাচরিত ওষুধের পাশাপাশি ক্যান্সার রোগীর শরীরে যদি জোঁকের স্যালাইভা প্রবেশ করানো যায়, তাহলে ব্রেস্ট, মেলানোমা, লাং এবং প্রস্টেট ক্যান্সারের প্রকোপ অনেকাংশেই কমানা সম্ভব হয়। পসঙ্গত, জোঁকের থুতুতে থাকা গিলেন্টেন নামক একটি উপাদান এক্ষেত্রে বিশেষ ভূমিকা পালন করে থাকে।

৩. ডায়াবেটিস রোগকে নিয়ন্ত্রণে রাখে:
বিশেষজ্ঞদের মতে আগামী ২০ বছরের মধ্যে সারা বিশ্বে প্রায় ৩৬৬ মিলিয়ান মানুষ এই মারণ রোগের শিকার হবে। এমন পরিস্থিতিতে সুস্থ থাকতে জোঁক থেরাপির প্রয়োজন যে বেড়েছে সে বিষয়ে কোনও সন্দেহ নেই। আসলে বেশ কিছু স্টাডিতে দেখা গেছে রক্তে শর্করারা মাত্রা নিয়ন্ত্রণে রাখার পাশাপাশি ডায়াবেটিসের কারণে হওয়া নানাবিধ জটিলতা, যেমন করনারি অ্যাথেরোস্কলেরোসিস, হাইপারগ্লাইসেমিয়া এবং অক্সিটেডিভ স্ট্রেস কমাতে জোঁক থেরাপি দারুন কাজে আসে।

৪. ছোঁয়াচে রোগের প্রকোপ কমায়:
কেমোথেরাপি নামক জার্নালে প্রকাশিত একটি গবেষণা পত্র অনুসারে জোঁকের শরীরে থাকা ডেস্টাবিলেস নামক এক ধরনের প্রোটিন আমাদের শরীরে প্রবেশ করার পর সব ধরনের জীবাণুকে মেরে ফেলে রোগের প্রকোপ কমাতে একেবারেই সময় নেয় না। প্রসঙ্গত, ২০০৩ সালে হওয়া একটি গবেষণায় দেখা গেছে জোঁকের শরীরে থাকা নিউরোসিগনালিং এবং অ্যান্টিমাইক্রোবিয়াল পেপটাইড যে কোনও ধরেনর সংক্রমণকে কমাতে বিশেষ ভূমিকা পালন করে থাকে।

৫. অস্টিওপোরোসিসের চিকিৎসা করে:
জয়েন্টে পেইনের কারণে কি একেবারে কাবু হয়ে পরেছেন? তাহলে একবার জোঁক থেরাপি করে দেখুন না! এমনটা করলে উপকার যে পাবেন, তা বলাই যায়। আসলে ব্যথা জায়গায় কিছু সময় জোঁককে রাখলে সেখানে রক্তের সরবরাহে উন্নতি ঘটে। ফলে অস্টিওপোরোসিসের মতো রোগের প্রকোপ কমতে সময় লাগে না।

৬. কানের যন্ত্রণা কমায়:
বেশ কিছু কেস স্টাডিতে দেখা গেছে ক্রণিক কানের যন্ত্রণা কমাতে জোঁকের কোনও বিকল্প হয় না বললেই চলে। এক্ষেত্রে একটা জোঁক কানের পিছনে, আর একটি কানের সামনে কিছু সময় রেখে দিতে হবে। এমনভাবে ৩-৪ দিন করলেই দেখবেন যন্ত্রণা একেবারে গায়েব হয়ে যাবে।
