আওয়ামী লীগের প্রেসিডিয়াম মেম্বার ও সাবেক এমপি বীর মুক্তিযোদ্ধা আব্দুর রহমান আগস্ট মাসকে সব হারানোর দিন, বেদনার দিন উল্লেখ করে বলেছেন, সামনে নির্বাচনকে সামনে রেখে একটি অশুভ রাজনৈতিক দল এবং স্বাধীনতা বিরোধী শক্তি নির্বাচনকে ভণ্ডুল করার উদ্দ্যেশে বিভিন্ন সময়ে বিভিন্ন দফা দিয়ে দেশে নৈরাজ্যকর পরিবেশ সৃষ্টি করার পায়তারা চালাচ্ছে। তাদেরকে বলি বাংলাদেশের মানুষ, মাটি ও ভৌগোলিক অবস্থা বিশ্বের জায়গা থেকে বিচ্ছিন্ন কোন দ্বীপ নয়; সারা পৃথিবীতে যেভাবে নির্বাচন হয় সংবিধান সম্মত অনুযায়ী। বাংলাদেশেও সংবিধান অনুযায়ী সামনের জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচন হবে। সেই নির্বাচন নিরপেক্ষ ও অবাধ সুষ্ঠু হবে। নির্বাচনে বাংলাদেশের মানুষ শেখ হাসিনাকে আবারও ম্যান্ডেট দিয়ে প্রধানমন্ত্রী বানাবে। সারা পৃথিবীর সৎ প্রধানমন্ত্রীদের তিনজনের একজন শেখ হাসিনা। দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার ক্ষমতাধর নারীদের মধ্যেও তিনি একজন। 

শুক্রবার বিকেল ৬টায় ফরিদপুরের আলফাডাঙ্গা উপজেলার বাসস্ট্যান্ড চত্বরে আওয়ামী লীগ ও অঙ্গসংগঠনের আয়োজনে বিএনপি-জামায়াতের নৈরাজ্যের প্রতিবাদে শান্তি সমাবেশে প্রধান অতিথির বক্তব্যে তিনি এসব কথা বলেন।

বিএনপিকে উদ্দেশ্য করে আব্দুর রহমান আরও বলেন, নির্বাচন ছাড়া এদেশে ক্ষমতায় আসার কোন রাস্তা নেই। ষড়যন্ত্রের নীলনকশা না করে আপনারা নির্বাচনে আসুন। স্বপ্ন দেখা ভালো। স্বপ্ন যদি দিবাস্বপ্ন হয় তাহলে ফল উল্টো হয়। বাংলাদেশের মানুষ এতো অকৃতজ্ঞ নয় ওতো আত্মভোলা নয়। যেই তারেক জিয়া ছিল হাওয়া ভবনের মালিক। খুয়াব ভবন তৈরি করে বিদেশে হাজার হাজার কোটি টাকা লুটপাট করে বিদেশে নিয়ে গিয়েছিল। এদেশের মানুষ আর তারেক জিয়াকে গ্রহণ করবে না বলে আমি বিশ্বাস করি।

তিনি বলেন, বিএনপি নির্বাচন হতে দিবে না, অথচ ক্ষমতায় আসতে চায়। তাদের লক্ষ্য নির্বাচন ছাড়া ক্ষমতায় আসার রাস্তা তথা আরেকটি ওয়ান ইলেভেন তৈরি করা। বাংলাদেশের কিছু জনবিচ্ছিন্ন ব্যক্তিদের দিয়ে অরাজনৈতিক সরকার গঠন করা।
