২০১৬ সাল ছিল জাতিসংঘের সামনে একুশ উদযাপনের ২৫ বছর। এ বছর জাতিসংঘের সামনে ফেব্রুয়ারির প্রথম দিনে স্থাপিত হয় মাসব্যপী আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসের ভাস্কর্য প্রদর্শনী। এ বছরই আমার আবেদনে ইউনাইটেড পোস্টাল সার্ভিস থেকে প্রকাশিত হয় আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসের ওপর স্মারক ডাকচিহ্ন। ২৪ বছর পর্যন্ত রাত ১২টা ১ মিনিটে জাতিসংঘের সামনে শহীদদের শ্রদ্ধা জ্ঞাপন করা হতো। ২০১৬ সাল থেকে ব্যাপক সংখ্যক আমেরিকার মূলধারার রাজনীতিবিদের অংশগ্রহণের ফলে বাংলাদেশের সময়ের সঙ্গে মিলিয়ে আমেরিকায় দুপুর ১টা ১ মিনিটে শ্রদ্ধা জানানোর প্রথা শুরু হয়।

নিউইয়র্ক তথা উত্তর আমেরিকা থেকে প্রকাশিত বাংলা ভাষার সব সংবাদমাধ্যমসহ লেখক, সাহিত্যিক, সাংবাদিক, শিল্পীসহ বাংলা ভাষাপ্রেমী সব বাঙালি অভিবাসী সমাজের নিরবচ্ছিন্ন ভালোবাসা না থাকলে কখনোই এ দীর্ঘ যাত্রা সম্ভব হতো না। আমরা এই বিশেষ দিনে অভিবাসী বাঙালি সমাজের কাছে আবেদন রাখছি, আসুন, আগে নিজের ঘর থেকে শুরু করি নিজ সন্তানদের সঠিক বাংলা শিক্ষাচর্চা। তাহলেই বায়ান্নর ভাষা আন্দোলন থেকে শুরু করে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস অর্জনের সার্থকতা পাবে।
