১৯৯১ সালে আমেরিকায় এসে ক্ষুণ্ণিবৃত্তির সন্ধান করতে গিয়ে নিউইয়র্ক থেকে প্রকাশিত প্রথম সাপ্তাহিক বাংলা সংবাদপত্র সৈয়দ মোহাম্মদ উল্লাহ সম্পাদিত ‘প্রবাসী’তে কাজে যোগ দিই। সেই সুবাদেই পত্রিকার উপদেষ্টা কথাশিল্পী জ্যোতিপ্রকাশ দত্ত, কবি শহীদ কাদরী ও ড. জাফর ইকবালের সঙ্গে অতি অল্প সময়ের মধ্যে যোগাযোগ ঘটে।

‘প্রবাসী’তে কাজ করার পাশাপাশি ‘মুক্তধারা নিউইয়র্ক’ শুরু করতে গিয়ে বাঙালির চেতনা মঞ্চের কয়েকজন তরুণের সঙ্গে প্রথম পরিচয়। শহীদ মিনার স্থাপন করে ভাষাশহীদদের শ্রদ্ধা জ্ঞাপন ও উত্তর আমেরিকা বাংলা বইমেলা আয়োজনের কথা ওদের জানাই। ওরা জানাল, ‘বাঙালির চেতনা মঞ্চ’ ১৯৯২ সাল থেকেই এ কার্যক্রম শুরু করতে চায় মুক্তধারা নিউইয়র্কের সঙ্গে যৌথভাবে। তারপর শুরু হলো আলোচনা, কীভাবে এর বাস্তবায়ন হবে।

গত ২৯ বছর ধরে জাতিসংঘ সদর দপ্তরের সামনে মুক্তধারা ও বাঙালির চেতনা মঞ্চ অনুষ্ঠান করে আসছে।

ভাষাসংগ্রামী আবদুল মতিন, একুশের গানের রচয়িতা আবদুল গাফ্‌ফার চৌধুরী, কবি শহীদ কাদরী, নির্মলেন্দু গুণ, সৈয়দ শামসুল হক, সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়, সমরেশ মজুমদার, শীর্ষেন্দু মুখোপাধ্যায়, রাবেয়া খাতুনসহ জাতিসংঘের স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধি এবং রাষ্ট্রদূত আনোয়ারুল করিম চৌধুরী, সাবেক তত্ত্বাবধারক সরকারের উপদেষ্টা ইফতেখার আহমেদ চৌধুরী, মুক্তিযোদ্ধা ড. নূরুন নবী, ডা. জিয়াউদ্দীন আহমেদ, কানাডা প্রবাসী রফিক আহমেদ, ইউনেস্কোর বিভিন্ন কর্মকর্তাসহ অনেক গুণী ব্যক্তি এই মিনারে শহীদদের শ্রদ্ধা জানিয়েছেন। নিউইয়র্কে বাঙালির সংখ্যা ও সংগঠকের ধারাবাহিক ক্রমবিকাশে ঘরে ও বাইরে অনেক শহীদ মিনার হলেও জাতিসংঘের শহীদ মিনার উত্তর আমেরিকা অভিবাসীদের কাছে ঢাকা কেন্দ্রীয় শহীদ মিনারের মতো অমলিন।

১৯৯৬ সালে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসের প্রস্তাবক মোহাম্মদ রফিক কানাডা থেকে আসেন জাতিসংঘের সামনে শহীদদের শ্রদ্ধা জানাতে। ১৯৯৯ সালে তারই প্রস্তাবে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসের স্বীকৃতি অর্জনের পর ২০০০ সাল থেকে জাতিসংঘের সামনের এ অনুষ্ঠানে যুক্ত হন ইউনেস্কো ও জাতিসংঘের কর্মকর্তাবৃন্দ। ২০১০ সালের জাতিসংঘ সাধারণ পরিষদের ৬৫তম অধিবেশনে পাস হয়- প্রতি বছর একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারি আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস পালন করবে জাতিসংঘ। ২০১১ সাল থেকে জাতিসংঘের সামনের আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসের অনুষ্ঠানে আমেরিকার মূলধারার রাজনীতিবিদদের যোগ দেওয়া শুরু হয়।

২০১৬ সাল ছিল জাতিসংঘের সামনে একুশ উদযাপনের ২৫ বছর। এ বছর জাতিসংঘের সামনে ফেব্রুয়ারির প্রথম দিনে স্থাপিত হয় মাসব্যপী আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসের ভাস্কর্য প্রদর্শনী। এ বছরই আমার আবেদনে ইউনাইটেড পোস্টাল সার্ভিস থেকে প্রকাশিত হয় আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসের ওপর স্মারক ডাকচিহ্ন। ২৪ বছর পর্যন্ত রাত ১২টা ১ মিনিটে জাতিসংঘের সামনে শহীদদের শ্রদ্ধা জ্ঞাপন করা হতো। ২০১৬ সাল থেকে ব্যাপক সংখ্যক আমেরিকার মূলধারার রাজনীতিবিদের অংশগ্রহণের ফলে বাংলাদেশের সময়ের সঙ্গে মিলিয়ে আমেরিকায় দুপুর ১টা ১ মিনিটে শ্রদ্ধা জানানোর প্রথা শুরু হয়।

নিউইয়র্ক তথা উত্তর আমেরিকা থেকে প্রকাশিত বাংলা ভাষার সব সংবাদমাধ্যমসহ লেখক, সাহিত্যিক, সাংবাদিক, শিল্পীসহ বাংলা ভাষাপ্রেমী সব বাঙালি অভিবাসী সমাজের নিরবচ্ছিন্ন ভালোবাসা না থাকলে কখনোই এ দীর্ঘ যাত্রা সম্ভব হতো না। আমরা এই বিশেষ দিনে অভিবাসী বাঙালি সমাজের কাছে আবেদন রাখছি, আসুন, আগে নিজের ঘর থেকে শুরু করি নিজ সন্তানদের সঠিক বাংলা শিক্ষাচর্চা। তাহলেই বায়ান্নর ভাষা আন্দোলন থেকে শুরু করে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস অর্জনের সার্থকতা পাবে।
