Yesterday, in the Gobindaganj area of greater Sylhet, widespread unrest broke out\nas angry residents flooded the streets, demanding severe punishment for a man\nreferred to as a child rapist. Protesters allege that a man named Rashel Ali is\ncurrently serving a prison sentence in the UK, after being convicted of raping a\nBangladeshi underage girl in the UK. \u2014a crime they say violates both Bangladesh\u2019s\nmoral fabric and Islamic values.<\/p>\n

Local Imams who joined the angry gathering issued a Fatwa, calling for the alleged\nperpetrator to face harsh consequences and declaring that he should never be\nallowed to return to Sylhet. The protestors, fuelled by outrage, demanded that\nRashel Ali be either hanged or emasculated for his actions. They have also vowed to\n\"amputate his ability to have sexual intercourse\" if he ever sets foot in Bangladesh\nagain.<\/p>\n
