Fishing banned in Padma-Meghna for two months

The government has banned all types of fishing, including hilsa, in the Padma-Meghna River Sanctuary area of Chandpur to conserve Jatka. The ban will be in effect from March 1 to April 30, said Chandpur District Fisheries Officer Asadul Baki.

Chandpur District Fisheries Officer Asadul Baki said that the district has designated a 90-kilometer sanctuary from Shatanal area of Matlab Uttar Upazila to Char Bhairavi of Haimchar Upazila and a 10-kilometer sanctuary from Char Bhairavi to Char Alexander of Raipur Upazila of Lakshmipur district.
He further said that there are 51,190 fishermen registered in Matlab North, Matlab South, Chandpur Sadar and Haimchar Upazilas. These fishermen will be made aware to refrain from killing jatka. In addition, awareness meetings, leaflet distribution, miking and banners will be put up in front of fish stalls in the river coastal areas. If we can save this jatka now, then the target level of Hilsa production will be achieved this season.
