BNP leader arrested on charges of smuggling relief rice

The District Detective Police (DB) has arrested the local BNP leader Jamal Uddin on the charge of selling the rice allocated to the Rohingyas of Notakhali in the black market.

He was arrested on Sunday afternoon from Janata Bazar Ghat of Harani Unitan of Hatita Upazila based on secret information.

Arrested 45-year-old Jamal Uddin Gazi No'takhali is a member of Subarnachar Upazila BNP, formerly a former joint agrant of the district farmers' party.

District DB Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazim Uddin Ahmed confirmed the incident to reporters.

He said, ‘In September, the people of Subarnachar's Janata Bazar will come to the Janata Bazar Ghat to smuggle the relief rice from the Bhasanchar Rohingya camp in the relief rice trawler. Then the local people will get the suspicion of getting the rice in the truck.

‘Then the police seized 21 tons of rice in two trucks. The same relief rice was accused of selling rice in the black market. This incident was filed against him under the Special Powers Act on September 20.

He also said, ‘In the last three years, the locals have complained that this BNP leader has become the owner of crores of rupees by selling Rohingya smuggling and relief rice in the black market.

District Superintendent of Police (SP) Md. Shahidul Islam said, ‘There are 9 cases against Gazi under the murder, extortion and explosives Act. He was absconding for a long time.
