UNO conducts midnight operation to protect Hilsa in Kamalnagar

Lakshmipur: Mohammad Nasir Uddin Sarwar, the newly appointed Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Kamalnagar, Lakshmipur, conducted a drive in the Meghna River at midnight to prevent fishermen from killing mother Hilsa fish in violation of the ban during the breeding season. During this, nets used to catch Hilsa were set on fire.

On Monday (October 2) at around 1:30 pm, he conducted a raid at various points of the Meghna River. Coast Guard and Fisheries Department officials were with him. During this time, 4,000 meters of current nets were seized. The fishermen could not be arrested as they fled after sensing his presence. Later, the seized nets were set on fire. Similarly, on the previous day, Sunday (October 1), from 12 midnight to early morning, he was active in the Meghna to protect the mother hilsa in the new char.

Kamalnagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Nasir Uddin Sarwar said, "We are working to ensure that fishermen cannot catch hilsa in the river even at night. The administration, police, coast guard and fisheries department are working hard to increase hilsa production."

Incidentally, the breeding season of Hilsa is in full swing from Sunday, October 1 to October 22. A ban has been imposed on fishing of all species of fish, including Hilsa, during these 22 days. Fishing will not be allowed in the 100-kilometer Meghna River area from Ramgati in Lakshmipur to Shatanal in Chandpur. During this time, fishing, transportation, storage, marketing and sale of fish are prohibited. Violation of this law is punishable by imprisonment or fine, or both.
