99 percent of people in the country have access to healthy sanitation: Prime Minister

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that it has been possible to bring 99 percent of the country's population under the umbrella of healthy sanitation and safe water sources, which was 33 percent in 2003.

He said this in a message on Friday (October 14) on the occasion of National Sanitation Month and Global Handwashing Day.

Sheikh Hasina said that the open defecation rate was 44 percent in 2003. Now it is almost zero. This success of Bangladesh has been praised internationally.

Many projects related to water, sanitation and waste management are underway, including the establishment of water laboratories in all districts of the country. The government is implementing various activities for human resource development, construction and use of environmentally friendly improved toilets, awareness on sanitation and waste management, innovation and application of sustainable technologies to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal-6.

He said, "Our government is committed to ensuring safe sanitation and a healthy environment for all. In 13 and a half years, it has implemented 50 projects at a cost of about 14 thousand crore taka to ensure safe water supply, healthy sanitation and waste management in rural and urban areas."

It is important to properly observe 'National Sanitation Month' and 'Global Handwashing Day' to ensure sanitation and water supply for all by 2030.
