Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has fired the country's Defense Minister Yoav Galant.

Netanyahu said there was a 'crisis of trust' between them.

In a statement announcing the appointment of Foreign Minister Katz as the new defense minister, Netanyahu said his trust in Gallant had "eroded" recently.

"The security of the State of Israel has been and will remain the goal of my life," Gallant wrote in a post on social media after his dismissal.

Netanyahu and Gallant had long had a strained relationship. The two have reportedly exchanged heated words over Israel's war strategy over the past year.

Gallant wanted to prioritize a hostage release deal with Hamas over continuing the war in Gaza.
Which Netanyahu rejected. Gallant was also unhappy with Israel's plans to exempt ultra-Orthodox citizens from military service.

Protests have already erupted in the streets of Tel Aviv over Gallant's dismissal, and Netanyahu's political opponents have called for larger protests involving the public.
