US tech giant Apple has said it will remove WhatsApp and Threads from its app store in China in compliance with a Chinese government order, citing national security concerns.
It is known that Apple recently removed WhatsApp and Threads, two popular platforms owned by Meta, from its application download site App Store. Although this change was made only in the Chinese branch of the App Store. Users in other regions can still download the two apps.
The US tech giant said the Chinese government ordered it to do so due to national security concerns. While WhatsApp and Threads have been blocked in China, other Meta apps including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and others are still available on the App Store.
Even apps like YouTube and Twitter (now X) platforms are still being downloaded. So it's not clear to us how WhatsApp and Threads in particular have become a national threat to the country.
