On Tuesday (May 12) morning, such a scene was seen in the paddy field of Sheikh Rustam Ali of Narendrapur village of Kachua upazila of Bagerhat.
This poor farmer has grown Boro paddy on two acres of 50th century land, with heavy rain and stormy winds, at least two acres of paddy in his field has been bent, and all the bent rice has grown seedlings, not only Rustam, but the same situation of most paddy farmers in the entire district.
According to the information of the District Agriculture Extension Department, Boro paddy has been cultivated in 68 thousand 171 hectares of land in the current season. At least 1,630 hectares of paddy has been completely destroyed after a few days of heavy rain.
The affected farmer Sheikh Rustam Ali said that more than 1 lakh 20 thousand rupees have been spent to build two and a half acres of land. It would cost 20 to 30 thousand taka to cut this paddy normally without storm and rain but now it will take at least 80 thousand taka to get this paddy home. I don't know what will happen this time, this middle-aged farmer took a deep breath because I would not cut the paddy if I didn't want it for the cow.
Molas of the same village, Molaffalf Molla, said, ‘I have no land. I built one bigha of land with a lease of 20,000 taka. All the paddy that was bent in the rain has been planted in the same condition of paddy.’
Humayun Kabir, a farmer of Utkul village in Bagerhat Sadar Upazila, planted Boro paddy in the fish area of one and a half bigha, and the paddy under the water could not be raised due to lack of workers, while the fish in the paddy and rotten water is dying.
Humayun Kabir also said, ‘Dhan has gone. The shrimp will not go home. And the shrimp and white fish in the enclosure have started to die. We have sold something by pulling the nets. This time the rain has actually ended us all.’
In this direction, the farmers who have brought the paddy home with great difficulty have to sell it at a much lower price last year where the rice mason was sold at Tk 900 to Tk 1200 in the open market, this time the paddy is being sold at Tk 600 to Tk 850.
Farmer Amir Howladar said, ‘This time the paddy was very good. Even after the rain and wind stormed the paddy, I got 80 maunds of paddy in two bighas of land. But because the rice was wet, I sold it in the mind. I have sold it in the mind of the cost. At least half a lakh Boro farmers in the district are in a state of Rustam, Humayun, Amir and Mozaffar. Everyone will have to count the losses this time.
The agriculture department is not listing the affected farmers. If any incentive ever gives, then these farmers will be given priority.
Deputy Director of Bagerhat of Agriculture Extension Department. Motahar Hossain said, ‘We visited the field after the rain. Many farmers have lost their paddy. There are not enough workers, the wages are also high. And the price of paddy in the open market is also very low. But if there is no more rain, the farmers can recover some damage.’
He also said that the affected farmers have been listed in different upazilas. If in the future This official said that if there is an opportunity to provide incentives or government support, then these farmers will be given priority.
